    Hi,

I just got my DV1000 and really like almost everything about it. I have the brightview screen. While in XP everything looks bright and clear. When I put on a DVD so everything is mostly dark an effect occurs which I'm not sure is normal for laptop LCDs or not.

When viewing a DVD from any kind of horiazontal angle - not to much of an angle at all, the edges of the screen seem washed out a lot. Sort of an inverse video effect (You can see this in just XP also but not as evident if not looking at pictures or a dark background).

If you go a little further to the right or left the inverse video effect becomes extreme to my mind. Does anyone who has the DV1000 or V2000 see this effect. How do you rate the DVD playback?

    Thanks,
    Casey

I just watched a DVD widescreen movie on my DV1000 and I was able to change my viewing angle to around 40-50 degress horizontally and I did not notice any inverse video effect at the edges and there was minimal darkening at the edges.
My screen does not have the Brightview option.

I just got my DV1000 w brightview, and discovered the same effect when watching DVDs as CaseyK24. After some quick tests what I found is that this "inverse color in dark areas" happens when you view the screen from any angle that is LOWER than zero degrees in the vertical axis. If you tilt the screen back too far...or sit somewhere LOWER than the monitor the effect is VERY noticable. However, if you tilt the screen to where it is facing perfectly flat at you or with the top slightly towards you the effect seems to go away (even if you are off to the side).

I have also found that this effect is NOT limited to dvd playback, but is much more noticable when doing so. I think this might be due to the different black levels of stuff encoded for tv display. If you put a photograph on your desktop with a wide range of brightness levels then squat down towards the ground while looking at the screen, you will find a sharp line of demarcation where this annoying effect kicks in.

If you stand up higher than the screen and look DOWN on it, it looks fine. The effect is only when viewing from a LOW angle.

If anyone out there has the dv1000 or v2000 WITHOUT Brightview, could you please try this test with yours and let us know the results? At this point I'm going to try and live with it a few days and see how I feel. May return it and just wait for a better all around laptop to come along (same size & price range...but with good 3d graphics chipset)

Yes, Depending on the screen tilt and angles it gets
better or worse. Also in quickplay I noticed that
if you increase the contrast its gets better (but
picture gets a little grainy). Also using PowerDVD
(Can download a trial version) its a little better.

Guess this means you want to hold off on buying the battery?
    Let me know.
