Hello eveyone!
So I have a DV1000 here. It will shut off by itself (over heating?) and no longer recognizes the Hard Drive (even when booting from XP install cd).
This sucker has one of the recalled batteries.
Do you all think that the battery has caused the HD problem? I hope it fixes the turning on and off prob (there seems to be a lot of fan issues on this guy too, but I think the battery overheating has caused most of these overheating/fan issues)
I should be getting a new battery soon. As far as the HD issue:
I have an old Sony Vaio (wish that guy didn't die on me, it was pricey) this a 5200RPM IDE drive. I also have an old Dell Inspiron 3800 with a IDE drive as well.
-Anyone know if either of these HDs will be able to replace the current HD in my HP?
Anyone out there dealing with the same issues? Thank you everyone!

Any laptop IDE drive that's not too thick will fit. I don't recall the exact height offhand but I think the current drives are about 9mm thick. Thicker drives were found in old machines so the Dell drive may or may not fit, but even if its too thick to fit inside you might be able to use it for testing without putting the HD cover back on the laptop.

Thanks Jim. I'm pretty sure that the Vaio HD will fit. Just wanted to double check that the speed difference wouldn't matter (I *think* the HP's HD is a step below 5200RPM? But maybe the HP is also a 5200RPM)
Hopefully this will fix the prob with the laptop not recognizing the HD.
Then it's onto the power probs. But one step at a time I guess. -
The speed difference doesn't matter for compatibility purposes. If you haven't already looked inside, the DV1000 has a little adapter that mounts onto the HD pins, you'll have to take that off the old drive and put it onto the "new" drive. For testing you don't have to mount the new drive into the caddy, but if you don't use the caddy put a strip of tape or a ribbon under the drive so you can pull it out afterwards.
For the overheating problem, the heatsink and fan probably need to be cleaned. Instead of blowing the dirt around from the outside, I would remove the bottom case and clean it from the inside. HP has the repair manual, aka "Maintenance and Service Guide" on their website if you need to refer to it . -
Ah HA! First off, thanks to all who gave some very helpful information. However, the lesson learned is: Check everything before assuming thee worst! I so have one last question tho at the end of this post.
So, the shutting off problem is actually just the power cord, not overheating issues. And the battery is just fine. Who knew! My symptoms so went hand in hand with all the issues I was reading about other people having with this laptop. Including the not recog the Hard Drive.
Well, as far as the HD goes, haha, there was no HD in the laptop! (I feel the need to tell everyone that I just received this laptop yesterday and was told the HD was acting funny, and there where power issues. Again, I had just assumed too much. I promise I am a little more intelligent than this post is making me seem)
Anyways, it seems now all I have to do is get a new power cord, or the correct tip for my IGo power adapter. And a new HD. I'm a little worried as to why the HD was removed, but we'll see.
Here is one last question for you all tho:
The caddy the HD sits in, and is then plugged into the laptop is missing. I'm afraid this caddy is needed for 1. stable the HD from vibrations and 2. electrical insulation. Am I being too careful here? Think it's save to jerry-rig my own caddy out of non-conductive material (i.e. oh I dunno...piece of cardboard or maybe something less flamable.
Thank you all again! -
All you need to do is take the hard drive adapter off the end of your current drive and pop it on the new one. As to if the battery caused the problem i have no idea.
