    Hi,

Is there an easy way to access the fan on this notebook? I've tried taking the thing apart, but have only been able to get as far as the keyboard and that's where I hit my threshold of comfort. If I go any further, I may break something.

This is pretty dire because I've recently noticed the fan has a whirling sound; almost like how it's dying. The distinctive sound is unmistakble from all the fans I've had to replace in the desktop.

Any help is appreciated. I've become too concerned to use the laptop for prolong periods because of this. And I dread using the vacuum errr.. I mean, desktop.

    Thanks

Are you out of warranty? You might try a can of compressed air first, to see if there's something stuck in the fan that could cause that noise.

Maybe try some blowing some compressed air in there? may loosten up some crud, but its probably a bad bearing. undervolting may help lower the temp also.

I hate to sound pessimistic, but you're right, I think it IS dire. I had to send my DV1000 back for warranty work due to this problem...fan died entirely and the machine would overheat quickly and not work. It must be a common problem. When I got it back (repaired) it worked fine (up until it got ripped off, that is). If this is still under warranty I'd send it back, I doubt you're going to be able to fix anything with air.

    Thanks guys.

I spent the better half of my morning disassembling my machine -- ****ed the consequences. Fortunately I came out of it unscathed. Everything seems to work and the fan has been performing as it once was -- so far. I dind't notice any dust which surprised me. The heatsink was pretty much dust free. I may have fudged something up however. The fan seems to come on in longer durations. I may have to reseat the CPU again.

Has anyone ever put Artic Silver 3 or similar gunk on their to help with heat transfer? I am also considering replacing the Celeron M for a P-M. Will have to see if my wallet approves.

    Curtis,
I have put Artic Silver on my older AMD Compaq and it gave me about a 3 degree temp drop. Hope that helps. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions and reassurance. I just want to know if this notebook will take a 1.8 745 Dothan CPU. It's a 400FSB CPU so it should be compatible. I'm not sure though. Don't want to plunk down major cash for something that doesn't work.

Any iron clad way to find out before hand? I can provide a CPU-Z screen shot if that helps.

It should be able to take that cpu. Hey, check out the forums for DV1000 owner at www.dv1000forums.com
I know there was someone there who gave a detailed account on how he swapped cpus. Good luck!

dv1000forums is very inactive most of the times.

I'm also a member there, but past experience has taught me that replies are far and few between.

A 1.8 sounds pretty sweet, but I'm more interested in the power saving feature more than anything else. This Celeron M is a pretty good work horse.

    Thanks again.
