    1gb ram
    80gb hdd

    6 cell battery
ect. ect. for within my budget $1000 +/-

    or hpshopping:
    pm 1.6 or 1.7
    512mb ram
    briteview screen
    12 cell bat.
    60gb hdd (5400)
    dvd burner
    remote
    within budget still

Ok, sorry for the second post here, but i think i should go with the 2nd one since it would have a 12 cell battery, no tax, free shipping and if i call and tell them i'm a student, i get $50 off aswell!

Well, I perfer the Sams Club deal because of their 6 month return policy and I think they sell 3 year warranties for only $100.

does Sams have a 6-month no questions asked return policy? I know Costco does but was not aware of Sams. Really though, if you're choosing a laptop you know fits your needs you'll want it for more than 6-months and it's not right to play games returning a laptop every six months to get another. I know rahul isn't suggesting that and he's just playing up the peace of mind aspect, and yes that does have some value. 3-year warranty for $100 is a steal if true. The brite screen and remote are standard across any config. It's a toss up really, the battery upgrade is definitely nice if you're going to be mobile, but if not the 1GB of RAM is more beneficial. If you can save over $100 by going through HPShopping.com, I'd go there, otherwise seems like the Sams deal wins.

You could also consider HPShopping.com. That way you can customize it they way you want. but only 30 day return policy. I'd recommend the 5400RPM hard drive for much better system performance.

yes, i believe the sams is a 4200rpm drive.....which i'd rather have a 60gb 5400rpm drive. also, the media remote and 12cell batter are alot better. oh, and if i'm a high school student, do i still get the $50 off?

Almost every build-to-order HP machine comes with a $50 mail-in rebate, no matter where you buy it. But besides that, you qualify for student pricing. It will probably be more than just a $50 discount over the HPShopping.com pricing. Call HP and ask them about a code for you to log on with, and you'll see the student pricing right on the website.

    x24,

Did you still see DV1000s in Sam's? I couldn't see any on their website or my local club. I only saw the L2000 on the shelf.

Sam's Club is run by Walmart.

Walmart is evil and must be destroyed.

    Shop at Costco
    or Staples
    or Office Depot
    or Best Buy
    or CompUSA
    or Circuit City
    or HPSHopping.com,
or just about anywhere but Walmart.

I thought CompUSA was evil as well. I keep hearing countless horror stories with their customer service and filing of rebates and such.

Well, there's a difference between crappy service and being evil. CompUSA may (or may not, I don't know) have crappy service....but Walmart is just plain evil in their business practices. I've never heard that about CompUSA.
