I have a UK specification HP DV1139 EN model. This model is a Centrino 725 Processor (1.6ghz) with a Brightview screen and 60GB Toshiba MK6025 GAS Hard Drive.

I like almost everything about this machine, including the great display and the great sound quality from the speakers plus the excellent battery life, which appears to be close to 4 hours with the screen fully dimmed (still usable at this brightness unlike many other notebooks) on the 6 cell battery when doing word processing and email. For DVD watching the 6 cell probably supports around 140 minutes depending on screen brightness. So the possible 12 cell battery performance looks pretty encouraging.

However the thing I can't stand about this machine and that may make me take it back for a refund is the hard drive which is a real crunch, crunch, crunch type affair when the machine is booting up and also when first loading apps like Excel, Word etc. However obviously once you are in an app like Word then the hard disk activity is much less frequent.

I find this really frustrating because I have owned three previous notebooks in the last 4 years, none of which had hard drives anywhere as noisy as this although I just had to get rid of my Asus M5N due to an unbearable fan noise issue from a whining fan that ran 24/7. By contrast the regular fan noise level on the DV1139 is barely audible although I know that its noisier fan level would bug me if it ran for more than just a few seconds now and again that presently seems to be the norm.

The Toshiba MK6025GAS hard drive not only makes a crunchety crunching sound at startup and when loading big applications but also makes smaller annoying disk write noises when you are in an application. These are typically a high pitched bzzzz bzzzz for a second or so that sounds almost electrical except that the hard drive light blinks at the same time.

Is it just my machine that has this noisy hard drive problem with the Toshiba drive or are lots of the rest of you simply suffering in silence for whatever reasons? To me this level of noise from a 2.5" notebook hard drive is both totally unnecessary and quite abnormal.

So why has no one else yet replied to me on this important issue?

Does this mean all you DV1000 owners are actually notebook hard drive noise lovers?

Or could it be that they are simply a more discerning and informed bunch of people over at http://notebookforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=96

I have the same drive in my PowerBook G4 (the computer shipped with it). Every 2 months or so, I have that same bzzz bzzz sound. When I do a repair disk, it fixes it, but I know that it will be back in a few months. I may get a 80gb WD drive to replace it here soon. Although it works, the day of downtime every month is kind of annoying (not to mention how loud the drive is).
