I checked out the service manual, to read up on disassembly. Thinking about opening my notebook up and removing the heat pads and replacing them with copper shims to reduce heat. that is, unless someone can find a way to downclock the GPU for cooling purposes... But I'd like to get it cooler so the fan won't have to run all the time.
-
I believe there was another thread that showed how to do this.
-
not with the dv2
-
I took apart my dv2-1030us and put Arctic Silver 5 on all the contacts. There was just some crappy material on there before, no pads though.
-
any better cooling?
-
-
yeah, there are no pads, just a LOT of thermal paste, way too much on the cpu and ATI chip. I cleaned them all out with alcohol and applied a thin layer of AS5, will take time to cure to get a final temp reading. as of right now, CPU is idling on battery (undervolted) at 48 degrees. Unfortunatley, no real change with GPU, currently idling at 55-57 degrees.
-
also, running xp (tiny) which I believe runs a little hotter than vista for some reason. will put vista on it and see if the temps are different. i think maybe its b/c of the mobility modder drivers I'm running with xp?
-
Well if their was thermal pads and u removed them to apply AS5 their will be little contact between them 2 maybe around a 1mm or less of spacing some ICD7 will better benefit the situation since ICD7 is much more dense than AS5 it will make better contact and since its 92% diamond weight it transfers heat at a much more adequate rate through the heastsink ........
-
no pads, just paste
-
if their was just paste, replace it with ICD7 best thermal paste at the present moment i used in my laptop and decreased the temps much better than AS5
-
will look into the paste, i personally like coolermaster thermal paste myself, but i had a tube of as5 laying here. not eager to open the case up again soon, unless i decide to install a bt module
-
Getting the mobo out was a PITA.
-
exactly, and after i did the thermal paste re-apply job and put the case all back together, i found out i had one leftover screw! dang it. So i re-opened the whole thing and installed the screw.

any of you happen to look at what clock generator PLL the dv2 uses?
DV2 replace cooling pads?
