My dv2000 has been acting strange for the past week. I left it on over night, one night( its set to sleep 1 hour), I woke up the next morning and was unable to awake it. All the lights where on, but it was unresponsive. I was forced to turn it off manually. I retired to restart, the fan spins, all the blue leds light up, and the hard drive light blinks once. I tried unplugg'n it and the battery and restarting, soon as i plug'd in the power cord, everything light up, but it still wouldn't start. After retrying this process several times it finally started up. It worked fine until i shut it down, and then tried using it the next day. It did the same thing. I have to turn it on and off several times before it will start, someday s it won't even start, seems to wanna start less and lessAny ideas or insight on what the problem could be would be great, thanks.

I don't really know what the problem is, but this seems like hardware failure to me. I would suggest for you to call HP and either get a new one or have it repaired.

Any beeps?
If you have something in your cd drive take it out. Also reseat the RAM if possible.
My old dv2000 has the same symptoms except it had beeps
Keep trying and you should still be able to get it boot into vista again, this would be a good time to backup your stuff. Youll most likely need to send it back to HP for repairs -
I get 3 beeps if the power supply is plugged in, on battery I get no beeps, but the same symptoms. I called HP and they said my warranty was 31 days expired, but they said they would extend my warranty free of charge just to fix this problem. Props to HP for once, now I'm just scared on what condition the notebook will come back in, but I guess I don't really have any other options -
3 beeps was the same thing i had. 1 long beep followed by 2 short ones. It means your graphics card is screwed. Mines in repairs at the moment getting processed, they have to replace the motherboard or give you a new one.

Same problem here. DV2120us Went through 2.5 hours of trouble shooting with HP and had no luck. I was told to send it in and the charge would be $300 flat fee. I can still boot the machine but I have to power on and off a few times to get it going.

i had the same problem as the OP. i had to get a new hard drive. i had to turn on off my laptop several times before it would boot up. i suggest when your laptop does boot up, it's time you back up what needs to be backed up and install a new hard drive. this might not be your problem but it was mine. i got a new hard drive and have not had any probelms.

I have the DV2120US and is 3 months out of warranty.
I have the same symptoms (no boot, no beebs but I have power). The laptop is too new to toss so I wanted to look into getting it repaired. Does anyone know of a reputable 3rd party repair company that would replace the motherboard (most likely the cause) without breaking the bank and guarantee their work for let's say 90 days?
Thanks! -
Do the problems you're describing have anything to do with this series running hot and then the motherboard failing? If that's the case, then HP will extend the warranty regardless. They mentioned this in another thread:

Believe it or not, while still in warranty, I sent it back to HP, they kept it for 3 months and finally sent it back with a (supposedly) a new mother board. Same problems continued so they gave-up and refunded me what I paid for it, minus Rebates. In addition, they told me to keep it as they no longer have a need for it. The way I see it, if I can find a place who'll be able to repair it for $100-$300, I'm way ahead of the game. If not, I'm no worse off. -
My DV2000 had the exact same problem back in October 2007. I had to send it in for repair (still under warranty), and they replaced the motherboard. Turn-around time was about 7 days. The horrible thing is the same problem started happening again a few days after I got it back. So, I sent it back in for repair, and they've had my notebook for about 21 days now. I plan on trying to get a case manager to send me a replacement. Wish me luck!
But, anyway, my advice to you is to backup all your important data the next time you can get the notebook to turn on. I was able to get mine to turn on and load Windows after several tries at first. But, eventually, the thing just wouldn't turn on at all. -
For you guys out of warranty by just a few months, I would still push for HP to take care of it. You just have to know how to talk. First of all, keep calling back until someone agrees to do it free of charge. And even though your model may not match the defects I described present in the dv6000/dv9000 series (by the way - when I said running hot, I didn't mean it actually had to be running - it could run hot, break, you turn it off - then the next time you go to run it, it doesn't work - that's usually how it works), I would still bring that up, because someone's been mentioning it happening in the dv2000 series. Just work the system folks. The wonder of calling customer service is that you always get someone different. If they don't give you what you want, call again.
I WOULD NOT PAY TO HAVE A LAPTOP FIXED THAT'S ONLY 3 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY.
We pay good money for this crap! Get them to extend the warranty free of charge. That's what these forums are for - look around and figure out how other people have done it. Use their same excuses. Don't pay a 3rd party for something that's really HP's fault. That's bull-poopy! -
They offer a one time extended warranty service for free.

I have an HP DV2000 and it won't start either. I dont' know much about computers and I'm out of warranty by 6 months. The lights go on, the fan runs for a couple seconds and that's where it ends. I had taken it a couple months ago to a 3rd party computer repair store for over-heating problems. It kept freezing during game play. The store looked at my computer because they thought maybe there was something wrapped around an electronic piece that could be causing it to over-heat. They didn't find anything, charged me 30$ and suggested a cooling pad. The cooling pad didn't help. About an hour into game play (doesn't matter what game it is) it freezes and you have to turn off the computer manually. Then my screen kept going out. Now I can't get it to start. It starts every now and then, like maybe once a week, but I have to sit there and take out the battery and plug it in and play with it for an hour before it even runs properly. Then when it does start up it says that my nvidia network adapter is unable to start (code10). I just can't believe how many problems I'm having so short after the warranty expired. I only used my computer for word documents for the first year, but now that my bf is into gaming he uses my laptop and it's just falling apart. I'm always next to him while he's using it so I know he's not throwing up against the wall or anything, but this is just ridiculous how hp wants to charge me for "technical support" when I didn't even call once while my pc was under warranty. Then they suggested the extended-warranty for 99$. I paid over a grand for this laptop a year and a half ago and I can't believe they're going to charge me more money to fix a well known problem.

Okay - I'm not gonna lie - I'm 26 and I still have my mother call for me, because for some STRANGE reason, she always gets what she wants.
Like, I call, try what she does and get nothing - or - I lose my temper and get nothing.
She calls and suddenly she's got free phones and equipment for her trouble or she gets an extended warranty for free or she gets out of contracts without having to pay penalties. And I HAVE NO IDEA HOW!?!?! She puts on the sweetest voice and will nicely ask for the supervisor and sometimes I notice her nicely telling them how stupid they are (but they probably don't realize she's telling them they're stupid). It's the most frustrating thing in the world - why couldn' t I have inherited "the negotiator" trait?!?!?!?
The only time I ever get anything from customer service is when I write e-mails or letters - they must like my writing or something. -

No - I enjoy my anatomy - shapeshifting wouldn't be a bad superpower to have though. Especially when I get pulled over for speeding.

I am having exactly the same issues with my DV2000z, Turion 64 single core. I purchased it in November of 2006. In about September or October of 2007, the wireless went out. I read about possible motherboard failures, and my warranty expired in November, so I called and asked for a repair. They said sure! we'll send you a box. 1 week later, no box so I called and after being transferred back and forth about 4 times, they agree to send me a new box. Another week, nada. I just give up since it was just the wireless. I could buy an external card.
Then, the cd drives(internal and external) ceased to be recognized. Then a few weeks later, the video adapter disappeared. I reinstalled Vista(upgrading was a mistake on a single core machine by the way). That solved everything except the wireless. This was in December.
I decide to send an e-mail to the CEO. I complained about the horrid service, and said that I had lost all faith in their product, and will never buy from them again. I also threatened with the BBB. After about a MONTH, I received an email from the case management people saying they would like to talk to me to resolve the issue. I call, and after explaining to the guy(an American!!!) he gets a new box shipped to me. I actually get the box and ship it off.
A month later, after two delays due to a parts shortage, I get it back working perfect, with a new topcase and all of my data intact. I proceed to reinstall XP, because it ran my laptop better. Three days later, last Saturday, it quits and will not boot at all. Just the blue lights and screen all funky.
I called my case manager, and he says there's a re-repair warranty, and he will get a new box sent to me. I should receive it today. If they don't fix it, I will complain and demand a refund. Then buy a MacBook. -
Just an update: I got my lappy back today! They replaced the motherboard, re installed xp with bloat ware but at least it works now
However, they add a ton of scratches to the lid, left marks by the hinge(screw driver) and cracked the bezel around the touch pad. I took pictures before sending off the near mint unit. ugh......now i'm waiting for a claims manager to call me tomorrow

Hey all,
Thanks for all the info regarding this problem. I got my Pavilion dv2415nr in September 2007 and it's worked fine, until about a month ago. Same problem as our OP. Every time the computer is either restarted or shut down, it won't come back on. Lights turn blue, HD blinks once, fan kicks on, and then nothing. If I ever tried to put it to sleep (a feature I used quite a bit before the problems began) it would do the same thing.
After much trial and error, I've figured out a reliable way to make it boot every time. With the laptop plugged in, I try to power it on. Nothing. I shut it off by holding the power button. I then unplug the AC adapter from the laptop and then plug it back in. It automatically tries to power on, to no avail, so I shut it down again by holding the power button. Then, when I hit the power button one more time, it boots.
If I've previously shut it down, or it's coming back on from a restart, then it boots fine. If I've tried to put it to sleep, however, and follow the same procedure to get it to boot, I get the "Windows did not shut down correctly . . . " black and white screen. I start Windows normally and everything's peachy.
I spent some time on the live chat with HP a few weeks ago about this. They said that perhaps a file had been corrupted. I did the diagnostic checks that come with the System Restore features and they came back reporting no problems with startup or the memory. So, somewhat reluctantly, I rolled the whole thing back to it's out of the box settings. Got all the updates, SP1 for Vista Home Premium, etc, and the problem persists.
I am going to contact them again and let them know that 1)their advice sucked, and 2) I want it fixed for free, regardless of my warranty situation.
. . . unless anyone has found a relatively easy way to get this problem to go away . . .

Hi everyone,
I have a very similar problem to the ones described in the posts above. My laptop (and multimedia lights and stuff) turns on but it wont boot up. It just stays frozen out in a black screen, not even accessing the BIOS menu!! Thing is, I had a slight incident involving water and laptop; it wouldn't turn on the day after the incident but it did turn on the following day (after, of course, undergoing system restoring). I made some backups and even bought a USB hard drive. But, when I was saving the files the screen turned black and it never changed back
Any help with this issue is highly appreciated. Best of luck.
