I have Vista Ultimate x32, Core Duo 2 GHz Processor, 2 Gigs of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200 Graphics Card.

Whenever I do the Experience Index update, it goes through the Texture Loads, the ALU things, etc., and it gets about halfway through and the computer just shuts off. No warning, it just freaking dies.
It happens when I preview/launch a screensaver as well. I previewed the Aurora screensaver, and it did the same thing.

I checked the dxdiag, nothing unusual.

I'm dumbfounded by this. Can someone assist?

    Thanks :p

Looks like you are having overheating issues. Check the temps of your GPU(you can use nvidia ntune) when it shuts down and see what the temps are like.

I had the exact same problem as you. Try this, after the laptop has been off and sitting and nice and cool for a while, try turning it on and running the test while everything is still cool and see if it works then.

You guys were right. I installed nTune, and it told me that my GPU was *IDLING* at 80C. If I run a screensaver or anything, it shoots above 100C, and then about 5 seconds later the notebook shuts off.

I just got my laptop back from HP for repairs on the Network Card (They said they just replaced the whole system board) and I'm guessing that's what the problem is stemming from. I called HP today and they said that they would have a Case Manager call me back tomorrow (Unlikely, after looking at people's encounters with this on these forums).

I can't send in my notebook, school is starting, and at the very least it runs Microsoft Word.

    Any suggestions?

Well, you could get a cooling fan which should help in dissipating some of the heat. If you dont want to spend on a cooling solution then you could underclock the graphics card, undervolt the cpu, disable Aero. Basically anything which can reduce the ambient temperatures in your system. This should bring your temps under control until you can find time to get it fixed.
