When I bought my notebook I decided to get the cheapest RAM and upgrade myself. I talked to hp support and asked them what kind i needed. they were very helpful and told me what kind to get. I decided to go with corsair. i got the VS1GSDS667D2. I popped it in and everything was great, I thought. My computer was working fine and it showed that they were working... I think. the only way I know how to check to see if they are working is control panel and system... It now said I had 1.92 gb of ram. I thought i was set. Ever since then my computer freezes about every 15-30 minutes of use and the only way to fix it is to hold the power button. I had no idea what was wrong. this was 2 days ago. finally today i thought it might be the ram i put in. I swapped it back out and have not had a problem since.
Can someone please help, did I do something wrong? get the wrong ram? do i need to update something for the ram to work properly? anyone who knows please help.

now im not 100% sure but from the number that you gave me it sounded like he told you to get ram that is 667mhz and according to the specs on the hp dv2000z it only takes ram at 533mhz so he told you to get the wrong ram

It sounds to me like you got bad RAM. I may be wrong, but I think if you run 667 RAM on a system that can't run it at that speed, it will just limit it to 533. Try running memtest and return the RAM if it's bad.

No, DDR2-667 should work just fine, HP is switching over to it, but Corsair ValueRAM isn't the most reliable stuff. If MemTest86+ verifies that it's failing (AMD CPUs are VERY picky about RAM) then send it back and try a different brand. For cheaper RAM I'd give Transcend a try, they've had good reviews for the older singlecore Turions but I've seen no reports from people with the TX2's. Normally I recommend Crucial but their DDR2-667 SODIMMs are atrociously expensive.

Is there any way to do this mem test without loading the program onto a floppy. I don't have a floppy drive. I would really appreciate any help. can you do it without loading it onto a floppy?
    thanks.

You can burn it to a CD/DVD and boot from it.

Download the Pre-compiled bootable ISO(zip), extract and burn the image to a CD and then boot from the CD.

wait, so can the dv2000z use 667 ram? or just 533? Mines on its way and I need to know what kind of ram to get to upgrade it. Can anyone absolutely confirm that the 667 works at 667 speeds?

I've been doing a similar thread for the v3000z, I had the same ram problems. I bought Transcend JetRam, and it randomly causes crashes (667). Same, if I put back in the stock ram, no problems. I ran memtest last nite with the 667, and weirdly it doesn't come up with any errors (it ran for 10 hours).

So I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm trying to run the 667 Transcend ram today to see if I still get crashes or if it magically repaired itself. :)

Sometimes RAM will only fail when the CPU is under heavy load so MemTest misses it. Just another thing to drive you crazy.

I'm sorry to hear that about Transcend, their DDR1 memory got good reviews from Turion owners. I wish Crucial's DDR2 memory wasn't so expensive, otherwise it'd be my #1 choice.

Just so everyone knows who cares... I sent that memory back and got Patriot brand 667 sodimms, and have not had one problem with my computer since I put them in. The corsair is the one that kept freezing.

I'll have to give it a try, yah my Transcend passes memtest but does seem to die under heavy stress. I don't want to do Corsair, people have been having tons of problems with them on neweggs site. Hopefully Patriots work for me, I'll miss having 2 gigs for now :(

okay, I just talked to the HP online chat people, who for some reason didnt know the FSB of their own notebooks. She did tell me however that it ships with PC2 4200 (533) ram, and it uses the NVIDIA nForce Go 430 chipset with the 6150, so does anyone know what the FSB of this chipset is? I think this should be able to handle DDR2 667, but does anyone know for sure? and does it use 5300 or 5400?

Current gen AMD's do not have any FSB as the memory controller is integrated on the cpu and so the chipset has nothing to do with memory compatibility. The memory controller according to AMD is capable of supporting memory upto DDR2 667(PC2 5300). You can probably use PC2 5400 but it will clock down to the same level as PC2 5300 and there is no significant performance difference between the two.

thanks for your help, clearly HP just lied to me. After I chatted with the person who couldnt tell me, I called the tech support line who told me although I can upgrade capacity I can not upgrade speed (after letting me wait 5 mins and then putting me on hold for another 5). However since AMD supports the memory, that was pretty much a blatant lie to cover up that they just plain dont know. Id rather them tell me they dont know then give me misinformation.

    but anyway, thanks again.

Adding on to what others have said, AMD does not have a traditional FSB like Intel processors. In addition to the integrated memory controller, AMD has a bidirectional link between all the other components and the CPU called Hypertransport that has a 1 Ghz bandwidth each direction.

Call the place where you are going to buy the RAM directly since it is what they do and should know more at the moment.

    Hi All,
This is from the link that Miner posted

    "Yes, 128-bit,
    supports unbuffered PC2-3200 (DDR2 400),
    PC2-4200/4300 (DDR2 533),
    PC2-5300 (DDR2 667) so-DIMMs"

To me it appears that the X2 can and does support DDR2 at 667 mhz.
