I dont know if this is a software or hardware issue, or if other people are experiencing this problem, but when i want to us the mute button above the keyboard sometimes it doesnt work. For instance i can have itunes running in the background and i hit mute and it wont mute the sound, until i maximize the itunes window then if i hit mute it works, or i close down itunes. i also have had the mute button turn red (ie its supposedly in mute mode) but the speakers are not actually muted. this happens all by itself randomly. if you have had similar problems, and or have solutions please let me know!!

Yes the mute button problem with iTunes is well known. It is due to incompatibilities between the audio driver (which controls the mute button) and iTunes. What actually happens with iTunes is that when you press mute, the command is sent as some form of a keyboard shortcut from the button to the speakers. But iTunes, because of its functions, will interpret that as a keyboard shortcut also and send a duplicate mute command. The end result is the mute command is sent twice, once by the button and once by iTunes. The speaker, naturally will mute for a split second, then unmute.

There are two solutions to this and neither is completely satisfactory. Both of them would involve losing the functions of the other Quicklaunch buttons (Play/pause, fast forward, rewind) when iTunes is in the background. But you'll have the mute button back in both cases.

1). You can revert back to iTunes 7.0.2. That's the last version of iTunes that didn't have the mute button issue

2). You can go into the iTunes installation directory and find a file called iTunesKeyboardCompatibility.dll, that's the file responsible for interpreting and executing keyboard shortcut inputs. The you make a new folder and drag that file into the folder. Finally, you rename the folder iTunesKeyboardCompatibility.dll (make sure to include the extension in the folder name). This method neutralizes the keyboard function of iTunes so no duplicate commands are sent. It also makes sure iTunes doesn't repair itself when it can't find the file (so make sure you add the .dll extension to the folder name). The downside is that all Quicklaunch keys aside from the mute buttons will now not work when iTunes is in the background (they'll still work when iTunes is selected).

    Hope this helps.

I have an HP dv2500t, running iTunes 7.1.1.5 and I am not having this issue with the Mute Button, it seems to mute just fine. The Audio driver version is 4.15.0.50 dated 3/8/2007 also I am using QLB version 6.20d. See if all of the above is running the same versions.

I did have the above scenario happed with my old dv200t before HP released Vista drivers for the Audio Codec.

The Audio driver isn't the solution because that's the version I've been using for a while. My QLB Driver however, is 6.10C only because HP has release newer ones yet.
