DV2799ea - How to install XP and all drivers (Yes it is possible)

This is for all those people out there who like me, finally got sick and tired of the constant hangs and freezes with the Vista enabled DV2799ea. I am not trying to DIS Microsofts new baby, well yes I am actually, but when something as innocuous as "Sticky Notes" causes the system to freeze for upwards of 3 minutes then I see no reason to continue with what can only be said is a sub standard unprofessional piece of software that is far from fit for purpose. Now before I get flamed, those are my personal opinions, and judging by the response on the web I am not alone. Okay rant over....

I did some searching on the INTAWEB and came up with a set of drivers that not only work, but allowed me to gain complete functionality from the DV2799ea using XP, and that includes the Microphone and wireless working without problem.

OK to start with you will need the following drivers. Please be aware that I used a Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD

1) You will need to install firmware F.2.A. This is sp38886.exe
2) Download the 82801HEM Sata driver. This will be needed for Windows XP installer - sp37005.exe. It is possible that Vista will have a problem with the software that trys to control the floppy drive, and will fail with an error. You will need to find an XP machine in order to create the disk.
3) Next you will need the correct Intel chipset drivers - sp36714.exe
4) Next you will need the Intel Matrix Storage Driver - sp38088.exe
5) Next you will need the video driver. This is the Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS driver version 156.83
6) Next you need to get the Lan Card driver - Marvel Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet
7) Next you need the Card Reader - Ricoh 5-1 Card Reader
8) Now download the Authentec Fingerprint driver 2501A
9) Next download the Wireless and Bluetooth module
10) Now download the Wireless adapter drivers - Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adpater
11) Next you will need to download the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture
12) Next download you will need the modem driver - Connexant Soft modem
13) Next download The audio driver - Connexant HDAudio 221
14) You will need to get the QuickLaunch buttons software
15) Now get the critical update for the QuickLaunch Buttons
16) Finally download the Alps Touchpad Driver

Now the fun starts...

1) First upgrade the BIOS to F.2.A.
2) Install the Sata driver to a floppy disk or slipstream it into a Windows XP SP2 CD.
3) Now restart the computer and kiss Vista Goodbye.
4) Make sure the Windows XP CD is in the drive. When it starts it will ask you to press F6 if you wish to install any SCSI drivers, Do it.
5) Point it to the 82801HEM SATA ACPI compliant Mobile driver in the list after it loads them from the Floppy.
6) Press enter and it will continue the installing of windows. If at this point the system restarts without install, then there is a chance that ACPI has not been sorted. The solution is to Press F7 (shortly after you pressed F6) a couple of times to disable it during the install, this will not affect the actual OS, just the install.

If it asks you to restart then you should do so unless I point out otherwise.

7) When Windows has installed, I would suggest you plug a couple of USB devices, so that the system has something to connect to. At this point the slider button on the front of the machine that allows you to turn the wireless network on and off should be on and lit up blue, if orange, then turn it on and make sure it is blue.
8) Install the Intel Chipset Drivers.
9) Now install the Intel Matrix Storage Driver.
10) Install the Nvidia graphics drivers. Due to the fact that windows has no driver installed for the video you will have to open the device manager and manually update the Video Graphics Array driver. It is easy to find, just look for the unknown list of Questions marks. Restart the machine.
11) Install the Marvell network adapter.
12) Install the Ricoh Card reader software.
13) Install the Fingerprint recognition Drivers.
14) Install the Wireless and Bluetooth drivers.
15) Uncompress the Intel Wireless drivers to a directory and manually update them. Do not allow windows to connect to the internet to find the drivers and make sure you tell it you will select them from a list, otherwise it will refuse to install.

Now comes the fun part, please follow this or you will not have sound or modem.

16) Install the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA), when it has completed it should find two pieces of new hardware, ignore them, but do not close them. DO NOT RESTART
17) Install the Connexant Modem driver, it should start and be successful as it is able to attach to the UAA that you have just installed. It will finish and tell you it is successful.
18) Install the Connexant HD Audio 221 driver, again it should complete successfully and tell you so. At this point you will be able to test the modem and soundcard for microphone and sound. If the Microphone is quiet, then click on the properties and then choose advanced. Click the Microphone boost.
19) Install the Quicklaunch buttons and security update.
20) Finally install the Alps touchpad button.

If you wish to use the Fingerprint scanner for anything then you will have to acquire the software application from somewhere else, as HP only ship the Vista version. Maybe you could try getting the Samsung version or from another manufacturer. Please don't ask me as I have not got it. I don't like passwords.

This concludes the installation of XP. Well done you can know get on with your work!!

Additional Information

Sound problem solved
After testing the setup further I have found out that DVD movies would not play sound. They would happily show the video but no sound. Again I trawled the internet and found a solution.

Download and install the AC3Filter 1.46
Run it and Voila it works again.

Video Problem solved
Shortly after installing everything, I started to notice a problem with Dialog boxes that would quickly show their contents and then it would become blank. Initially I suspected Service Pack 3, but it soon turned out to be the video driver - Well done Nvidia for another fine product.

It would appear the best driver for the job is version 163.75. You should be able to get this from LaptopVideo2Go.com

Please be aware that as the mobile chipset driver is not present, you should use the desktop variant - Geforce 8400 GS. I have not found a problem with this yet, and I have used this trick on over 6 laptops, due in no small part to intransigent computer companies not updating their drivers.

Fingerprint Recognition software problem solved
Due to the fact that Digitalpersona Personal is only for Windows Vista, I had to find something else that would work with XP. Well here it is, an HP Softpaq, with the Verisoft Access Manager. When installing, it will quote that it is only for a specific machine and Windows Vista, but continue and it will install.

Don't let Windows Update near your Audio or Modem driver
I recently allowed the Modem and Audio drivers to be updated by Windows Update, but this was a mistake. Not fatal as I was able to roll back the driver, but annoying all the same.
It would appear that if you allow the update to the audio, it will no longer mute the Laptop speakers, if you plug in headphones or a docking station. The strange thing is everything will make a sound. In addition to this the Microphones will no longer work properly.

3D Games playback, judders or is slow.
If you find that video performance is sub-standard, do not assume that it is the video drivers. Today I did some tests using 'Myst V - End of Ages' and 'Battlefield 2' because the performance when turning left or right in first person view was very jerky and poor.
To my surprise it was the mouse that was at fault, and when I changed it from an old Logitech optical mouse to a slightly more modern Logitech VX500, the problem of poor performing graphics went away. This is strange as on the older dv2224ea laptop, that I had also downgraded from Vista to XP, this was not a problem. I believe that all dv2799ea laptops come with nice shiny new optical HP mice, try that it might cure your problem.

I already do the steps....

The thing is, if you press F7 when installing XP you will not have the ACPI-compliant loaded on windows. Have you check on device manager ? Is there any Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller ?

Also, you will not have option on STAND-BY mode when clicking shutdown & you have to manual shutdown because the windows will popping up "IT'S NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER" windows....

 

Trying to make another slipstreamed installation CD with disabling/remove SATA/RAID controller. Hopefully this work...

 

Okay, I shall try to answer your questions one by one.

1) When installing, due to the fact that I had upgraded to BIOS version F.2.A, I did not need to press F7. I did however need to load the SATA driver by pressing F6. When the installation was complete the Device Manager showed all ACPI compliant devices active and present.

Shown below is the Battery drivers in the device manager.



And this is the system drivers for the chipset and ACPI devices.



I had a little hunt on the INTAWEB, looking for the chipset in your laptop and it would appear that the 2799ea and the 2711tx both share the same. This would point to the BIOS being the culprit, meaning you will have to find some way of disabling the SATA options in the BIOS. As I said for me with the above BIOS meant I had no problem.

On the issue of Suspend and shutdown, I have not had any problems. It all seems to work and the options are available in the power control panel and the shutdown menu.

I loaded it off floppy, it seemed the easiest way to get it working.

Press F6 right at the start, then when it asks point it at the 82801HEM SATA driver for Mobile chipset.

 

Currently i'm installing XP now.. No BSOD now

i dont have a usb floppy drive tried to use NLITE did the integration o the drivers but load up XP get stuck on the "press f6 for scsi drivers" may be doing something wrong

 

I unfortunately do not have any experience with Nlite, so I can not say what you are doing wrong.

By 'Get stuck' I assume you mean that the XP installation either freezes, or it continues on its merry way, ignoring your input.

Question...Have you tried to install the sata driver from a memory stick? It might see the memory stick as a drive that early on. If that fails then you could always see if an SD card in the SD slot would work.

Other than that I am not sure.

hey snowybear - your guide rocks. you should license it to HP - it makes their computers work. it seems that they've finally seen the light a little bit to release the xp compatible F.2A bios.

i finally got my bricked-by-bad-bios dv2700t back & am now running xp sp2, which i repair-installed over the xp i'd used in the previous laptop. however, i've yet to sort out the problem with the sound.

namely - i CAN get it to install with no problem if i clean up earlier versions from the registry, and i do have sound for that session, but upon reboot the sound doesn't load correctly. the driver's properties tab says "driver is enabled but has not been started." and i can do this in a loop ad neuseum.

any ideas? - i've wasted a day on this so far; and another day sometime before setting up a friend's 6000-series lap. on that one a customized driver that i found somewhere on the web sorted out the problem, but it doesn't on the 2700. regardless - conexant should be illegalized.

 

answering my own question here - the web seems to be full of people suffering from this and/or related questions; the culprit in fact is ms, as usual, not conexant - where the ms-uaa somehow loses connection to even a correctly functioning audio driver set and needs to be forced to re-recognize things. rather importantly, this doesn't even put you into the perpetual reinstall/reboot loop that most other suggested solutions do.

the below is from annoyances.org - pay attention to:

create a variable named devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices

that will let you actually SEE what's going on on your xp box. it's very informative to see all the long gone devices that you had 5 years ago still there clogging up the registry...

got XP image made up now so thats good thought it was plain sailing after that but i cant get graphics drivers that work they keep saying "notcompatable" or something doing my head in

 

How are you upgrading the graphics drivers?

If you run the graphics driver setup file, then it will not be happy, it will say that the device you are trying to update is not present. I had this.

If however, you open device manager, locate the yellow exclamation mark that says Video Graphics Array, or something similar.

1) Right click on it and choose properties.
2) click on the tab Driver tab.
3) Click 'Update driver' button.

Now you have to tell the machine not to install from a recommended source. Tell it you will choose the location of the driver. At one point you will be asked what driver you want from a list, yours will not be there, you have to say 'Have Disk'.

Force the machine to look into the directory that has the graphics driver and locate the file 'nv4_disp.inf', then click ok.

It should then install the driver.

P.s. look for the driver Geforce 8400 GS, I believe you will not find your driver graphics driver listed.

 

Hi. When I installed XP on my DV2700t, the icons for Lan and wireless network adapter would take about 3 mins before they appear on the taskbar. During those 3 mins I cant do anything like starting a new program or opening "my computer". It's like the network adapters would take 3 mins to load?

One note for people... I had to slip SATA drivers into my XP as I have no floppy drive. nLite did the trick... small note, when adding the SATA drivers it will ask you to pick the one you need... you can find this info in the control panel/system/device manager under IDE drives (it's the SATA one funnily enough).

I did have the issue with the graphics card.... you do have to choose
"Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and select have disk as Snowy said. Even if you point it to the right location in the search it doesn't seem to like it.

Another note for people, the touchpad seems to be directly effected by the video card driver. I'm sure Snowy knows this as he didn't put everything in the order he did for no reason.... but as I had an issue downloading the video driver for some reason so I skipped it to return later. Until this was sorted the touchpad settings (tap disable and extra tabs in control panel/mouse) would not show and the explorer scroll part of the pad did not function.

Small things that might help a little...

But all round, nice one Snowy. Appreciated.

I'm trying to load XP onto my machine and followed the steps outlined. I have managed to update Bios, load 82801HEM controller onto a floppy and point XP setup to the Floppy. Setup recognised the Hard drive and allows me to quick format hard drive. However just after the format when it begins to load XP onto hard drive machine asked me to

"Insert the disk Labeled: Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver into drive A:"

At this point I have not removed the floppy disk from my external USB floppy drive.

When I pres enter to indicate to the machine that the floppy is inserted nothing happens.

Any help you can give would be appreciated

Thanks for the hints & the driver links superb - should have done this months ago... Just wonderful to be back in xpland after a 9 months of dreadful dreadful vista - Everything works, mic, fingerprint reader, wireless, quicklaunch, the full shebang, super!!!

FYI, I slipped the sata driver into the xppro image with nlite - worked a treat!

Next challenge I want is to try to slip in all the functioning drivers in nlite - see if I can build a full suitable xppro image hehe!!

first of all, thanks to all those who have contributed on this subject I have found the whole discussions and suggestions very useful.

I have had the same problem had been trying to install XP on my DV2799EA but could not do it before seeing this amazing topic here.

I have just followed your instructions and managed to install the first driver from a USB floppy disk, but aftre the xp installation process, it also asks for the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver, this is where I have been stacked. I don't know how to instal it, because obviously its not possible to use flopy disk to looad this, I put it on a USB flash drive and it did not detect it, I even copied it into a blank disk and inserted it into the CD ROM, but still does not pull it and detect it, so I don't really know how to load this drive and the rest of the drives, because it does not give me any other options apart from F3=QUITE ENTER=CONTINUE.

I was thinking if there is anyway to put all the needed drivers onto the xp OS disks and load them with the installation process but I am not sure if it would work.

your help and assistance would be appreciated very much,

want try this but im not that confident, my 2799ea is running so slow my partner has an acer 5332 on windows 7 that run quicker than hp on vista, i need a brave pill did any one build a disc to help
