So I just got the DV3 from Costco and was wondering if my new machine has a problem. The Fan is just so noisly compared to my macbook pro. The fan keeps going high and low by itself. I downloaded the speedfan to see my tempearture. The result is.....78 degrees C without doing anything intensive. Is there a problem or is this just how HP laptops work?

Anyone please? I am going to have to return this laptop tomorrow if this is a problem. Is there anywhere around it?

I purchased my DV3 a couple months ago from Staples.

The fan is definitely noisy most of the time and both the CPU/GPU run hot in general for most situations.

E.g. I am sitting in class right now listening to a lecture with only PP running and the overall temp is sitting at 42C. This is also while I am in power saver mode.

So to answer your question, no, it is not just your laptop. Personally, the fan noise never really bothers me. The only thing that concerns me is the temps. While using it at my desk I prop the back up to increase airflow which generally cools it down by 2-3C. Once I get back to the states I will most likely look into a cooling pad to keep temperatures down while using it at my desk.

    Hope this helps some.

edit: I also just wanted to say that I reach 78C almost every time I am gaming or even just watching movies.

Doesn't this cause a problem in your lecture? I was going to use this laptop in the lecture rooms as well but worried about distracting others with such high noise from the fans.

I don't have a dv3 but I did have that fluctuating fan problem on my dv5 were it would speed up and down annoyingly. Updating the bios fixed that problem, and man it was so much more enjoyable after that.

For the most part, when I put the laptop in the power saver mode (given I tweaked it a bit to try and maximize this effect) the fan stays pretty quiet. But as soon as I start opening other applications the fan does kick in but it doesn't stay on for that long.

Nope, the fan noise is common unfortunately. Tried a DV3 myself and found that the thing was running far too hot and noisy for what I needed it for.
