I'm configuring a DV4000 for my son's xmass present. I'm buying with an x700 so he can game. I'm undecided about three configuration items, they are:

100 Gig vs 80 Gig... for the extra $39 bucks this doesn't seem like a a bad deal.

12 cell battery - it sticks out, so I'm less enthusiastic about this option. How long does does the 6 cell battery last?

Remote Control - Does anyone actually use this?

    Thanks!

Well, I would stick with the 80GB hard drive - it's faster at 5400RPM, which has a 33% performance advantage over 4200RPM.

You can get 2.5-3.0Hrs of battery with the 6-cell. In my opinion, that is plenty. The 12-cell battery effectively doubles the battery life. But, in doing so, the 12-cell makes it bulky.

It's pretty neat - you can control movies and such, music, etc. I'd get it for $15. ;)

Oh and BTW - nice gift!

    Chaz,

Thanks for the sogo's! I would have bought an xBox 360 ths year, but for the same ridiculous price as a marked up 360 I can by a hp DV4000 configured for gaming! Sweet.

I have a Dv4000 and really like it... and I'd second Chaz's recommendations, particularly regarding he HDD. I got 2 6 cells with my machine and do find that I use the second one more oftern than I thought I would... I bet if you drop the 12 cell and the 100 Gig HDD, you could buy a 2nd battery for about the same price.

I have a DV4000 with similar characteristics and I love, you won't regret, but be careful, dv4000 with x700 doesn't support the IR remote, they have eliminated the IR port. (I think that if you configure it without x700 you can get it, not sure).

If you go to hpshopping and search for the remote, I think there's a disclaimer on this. Sorry! :(

I reviewed my dv4000 with the x700 recently, and you can check out my review here. My reasoning behind going with 2 6-cells is in there, and I'm happy with it.

Perhaps the first round of dv4000's with the x700 didn't support the remote, but mine does. I use it all the time - I'm in hotels every other week for law-firm interviews, and I'll pop a DVD from the Firefly box-set in and click away! The remote does work, and the IR port is still right next to the power/charge/HD lights.

Definitely get the 5200 r.p.m. drive!

I'm pretty sure that the dv1000, dv4000 and the dv8000 definately have the IR port standard - It's other notebooks like the zv6000, ze2000, etc. that may not have the IR port.

My zv6000 has an IR port. I heard that the Compaq R4000 (twin of the zv6000) does not have an IR port. So maybe it is that the HP DV4000 has an IR port, but the Compaq twin (v4000?) does not have an IR port.
