I just received my DV4000 yesterday. I have noticed that the fan is on about 90% of the time. It doesn't seem to matter too much whether it is on AC power or not. When the fan does turn off, it doesn't take much to get it back on again. Browsing the web for a couple of minutes will usually do it.

    Anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Not for me, mine is whisper quiet, I can't even notice it until I actually try to.

for me fan comes like every 5 -10 minutes ...it stays for about a minute or so and goes off....especially when i run a code and if the program crashes, the fan starts....or when i start acrobat reader professional 6.0, it starts...otherwise for normal net browsing it is quiet most of time

Check the BIOS to make sure the option to have the fan on always while on AC is not enabled.

Also, check your power management settings, make sure it's on Notebook/Laptop rather than Always On. Having it on Always On makes the CPU run at full power all the time. This causes the CPU to heatup more and therefore makes the fan run more.

Are there two fan speeds? When I boot up, there is a loud whoosh sound that dies down into a quiet sound. The fan is on, it's quiet but you can hear it and feel the air flowing in back. I have heard a fan come on that was a lot louder and it didn't stay on. So is the fan on a slow speed most of the time and only turns up when it needs to?

This is what they told me to do. Steps 1-4 didn't do anything for me.

    Step #1: Reset Computer BIOS.
Step #2: Remove unwanted programs from startup.
Step #3: Perform Online virus check.
Step #4: Improve System Resources by following each of the
instructions mentioned in below given web site:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00034290

Hope, this resolves the issue. However, if the problem persists, then
    proceed to Step #6.
Step #5: Download and install System Enhancements Disk from below
    mentioned URL: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...product=468789&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-31105-1

Step #6: Download and install BIOS update from below mentioned URL:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...product=468789&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-34131-1

i ran the bios utility, but mine has already version F.16 installed. I guess this explains why my fan turns on less often than yours.thanks for the links.

I could be wrong, but I believe the louder Whooosh you hear when you boot up is your DVD/CD drive.
