    Hi:

I'm attempting to upgrade the hard drive in my DV4040 from 100GB to 160GB. The new drive is a Samsung H160HC PATA.

With the new drive installed I begin installing Windows XP home and got to the point where it re-booted after the "File-Copy" portion of the setup and I then received a message " Error Loading Operating System".

Microsoft help and support site says that this can happen if the BIOS does not support the hard drive capacity and suggested upgrading the BIOS. I did that and am at F.17 but the problem remains.

Does anyone know if F.17 supports 160GB capacity and if not is there a later BIOS update that does?

    Any suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks

Does your WinXP install disc have SP2 integrated? If not, that's (probably) your problem. You can use nLite to automate the integration of SP2 into an older WinXP distribution.

Yes, my install disk is XP Home SP2.

If anyone is running a 160GB drive or larger on a DV4000, I would appreciate knowing what BIOS rev you are running.

I have seen references to a F.26 and F.27 BIOS while doing searches but the HP website shows on only the F.17 for this notebook.

    Thanks

I decided to try to split the drive into 2 logical partitions and that appears to have done the trick. I split the 160GB up into 2X80GB partitions and re-installed Widows. It booted from the hard drive immediately after the "file copy" phase and is working fine now.

So, I guess the BIOS (or Windows)was complaining about the logical HDD size rather than the physical.

Thanks to all who read and posted.
