I'd just like to say that I am very, very disappointed by the quality of the keyboard on my DV4000. I've only had it for about two months and have been using it regularly. But almost all of the keys on it are already getting worn out, smooth and glossy. Is this a fault of all keyboards or just HP's?
Has any other DV4000 owner had this issue?

I'm using a HP ze1250....a little over 3 years old....and the home row keys, space bar, and other common keys have been glossy for some time....the good thing is that after they wore glossy, they didn't wear out any since. I am actually surprised at the long-term durability of an HP laptop keyboard. I think the problem in this case is that HP is trying to go for textured, matte keys, but they are using plastic. Short of going for a powerbook style metal keyboard, I think they're stuck with what they're using.
If it's any consolation, and if my dinosaur HP is worth comparison, then you really won't have to worry about it progressing past looking like you had greasy fingers the last time you used your computer. -
I've had mine for only a little over a month, but I've used it a lot... no noticable wear as yet. In fact, I think the layout and feel of this keyboard is one of the good (many) points of the Dv4000. Sorry to hear this had occured with your lappy, I hope it's an isolated incendent. Have you talked awith HP aobut it, I mean only 2 months, you shouldn't have this problem.?

Yes I have noticed it too on my dv4170 as well.
But I have seen other keyboards on other dv4000 series with celeron processors that seem much better then this.
Oh well. -
Several DV1000 owners have reported this as well.
Besides the wearing out, I absoutely LOVE the keyboard though. It is a pure joy to type on and one of the best keyboards I have typed on. I personally think HP makes good keyboards when it comes to comfort. But I am disappointed by how fast my keys have already become worn out. Oh well..... -

I had an HP zv5000, and the keyboard didn't wear out to the extent that you are speaking of...and I had it for about 8 months.
That was one thing I did notice when I compared my old zv5000 to the newer zv6000 - the keyboard. It was much more solid on the old one - thicker keys, more durable. The new one seemed kind of cheap to me. -
Have a dv4000 with the x700. Showing zero wear on the keyboard. That being said, give HP a call, they will just replace the keyboard. So far the customer service has been the even better than the excellent laptop.

Well Warhammer999, you haven't owned your DV4000 as long as I have, could you maybe tell me the condition of your keyboard after owning it for a little over two months?
-
Correct I have not owned it as long as you have, that is why I qualified my statement by saying ZERO wear. I will follow up with a post at the 2 month mark, and let you know if anything has changed. I still recommend you contact hp support and see what they can do for you. -
No probs here.
I work with two guys with Dells. One lost a key and a brand new keyboard was only $20 shipped. I was really surprised, so if it bothers you a lot, you may want to look at a replacement as it could be cheaper than you think. -
Sorry to bump an old topic, but I wanted to add that I've just received my DV4000 to find that the left arrow key doesn't work properly. What a bummer. I was told that I could get it replaced, but I'd really rather just have it repaired somewhere locally. I've already spent all day partitioning and installing applications, and I don't particularly like the idea of waiting another week or so to get a new one over one little key. >_< "Buyer Beware," I suppose, but I'm satisfied with all other aspects.
I hope it's easy to get it fixed. :X -

Aigle, I really wouldn't freak out over the DV4000's keyboards. Overall, I'd say the keyboards on em are of very good quality, my only complain is that they begin to look shiny and worn down after a relatively short time, but the keyboard still works 100%. I've been typing ferociously on my DV4000's keyboard for over 3 months and I've had no problems with it whatsoever!
