I too was upset to find this out, especially after waiting for about a month just for this to become available.

Tyzing, where did you get the information about the additional delay?

Talked with HP at 7:50 AM this morning... no Dv4000s will be available today. The salesman's best guess was Monday morning for availability. Couldn't get any solid reason for the delay, just an opinion that when products are delayed it's usually a parts supply problem.

Now (9:30 am EST) HP is saying the web page is being updated and the new machines will be available for configuring very shortly.

)-: 10:10 AM EST )-: spoke with HP sales, they just got an up date saying the 4000s won't be available until this weekend. Obiviously a "fluid" situation. Man, you'd think a company with the experience of HP could get their shi... stuff together.

Looks to me like even when they are finally offering them and they're up for configuration on the hpshopping.com website, they have a perfect atmosphere for delayed shipping. Excuses are likely to come to those of us who commit early....at least that's what I'm expecting.

Just got off the phone with them AGAIN 11:00am and they said they WILL have them tomorrow....are there any "seceret" coupons that I dont know about or something we can use to get more for the buck...i dont care if its only for a printer or something, anything extra would be great...other then the student discount, which i plan on using....they've taken down the DV4000 completely b/c they arent going to offer it anymore without the graphics card

Good point. I'd love to get the configuration picture/prices however. I understand from talking with Lenovo sales that the new 15.4 Z60s with a dedicated video package will be out soon as well.... Hummmm a 15.4 wideview Thinkpad with decent graphics package, THAT sounds pretty sweet. Sony's now offering the Go 6400 on the FS 790 too. More/better graphics options seem to be falling out of the Admin-o-sphere lately. Cool for us eager buyers.

I just hung-up the phone (11:10 am C.S.T) with an HP customer service rep, and his words to me were that it was not going to be available until Friday at the earliest, and then he added the words "hopefully Friday" when I asked him to repeat himself.

Conflicting release dates abound, and the only sure thing right now is that it's delayed.

    This Sucks!

Ack! I just got my DV4000 almost a month ago and I'm stuck with the crappy GMA 900 graphics!!

I wish there was a way to find out at least a month in advance what new things will be coming out. Stupid technology, its advancing too fast for me to keep up.

I'm sure in no time at all that those of us who get the "new" dv4000 will be in your position. It's inevitable in today's fast-moving tech world. Top-of-the-line is a temporary and very short-lived title.

The X700 is far from "top of the line," but I agree. Just be happy with what you've got. Technology always moves forward, and whatever you have becomes obsolete in 6 months.

By the way, HP will be doing something similar to Dell really soon in that they will announce a new lineup of Media Center oriented notebooks and desktops. The article cited end of Septemer / early October, so it should be coming soon...

Makes perfect sense given that the zd8000, a year old model badly needs an upgrade to even hold a handle to the offerings from every other company. First and foremost, it needs to drop the P4 and move to Pentium-M and secondly, it needs a new graphics card, probably an X800/6800, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something from the next gen lineup.

Yeah, HP is behind other companies. They need to do an overhaul of the ZD8000 or replace it. Pentium 4 has to go ASAP. It shouldn't even have been in it.

Agreed Eliwood, I didn't mean to contend that the X700 was "the top of the line" but rather that it was new and the best available for this particular notebook.

Although I'm intrigued at what HP might possible do down the road (as you indicated they might with regards to their MC editions), my needs are more immediate, and if HP can offer the refreshed version of the dv4000 I'll probably pull the pin and buy as soon as it's available. If they drag their feet through the weekend I'm going with an ASUS notebook.

Truth be told, part of me hopes that HP drops the ball on this...ASUS' build quality is far superior, but at the expense of some of the latest-and-greatest components, but for my needs it's not that imperative.

I agree - HP needs an overhaul. I think they are slapping the X700 in the DV4k just because they need something to compete with other manufacturers.

Yes, the zd8000 is a very powerful laptop, but it needs a makeover.
Get rid of the P4, the NetBurst architecture is inefficent, plus it is a power hog and gets quite toasty. And, although the 256MB of DDR in the MRX600 is nice, the X600 is an aging card - based on the 9600 and only has 4 parallel pixel pipelines and 2 vertex engines - doesn't cut it for today's games, much less tomorrows. :(

    I think HP could make a really nice looking 17" laptop, with a PM and a Radeon X700 or X800, possibly a Go6800. :D

Here is a valuable lesson - when you see a laptop you like, and it suits your needs, go for it. If you keep waiting for the latest technology and the lowest prices, you'll never get a laptop. ;)

"Here is a valuable lesson - when you see a laptop you like, and it suits your needs, go for it. If you keep waiting for the latest technology and the lowest prices, you'll never get a laptop. "

Truer words were never spoken, that was beautiful. :)

I really do like HP. I love their speakers, their printers, their decent prices, build quality, I don't know about their customer support since I haven't had to use it so far, their sexy looks, some innovations like QuickPlay and Lightscribe.

Though they are behind most other manufacturers. I mean, their ZD8000 still has a Pentium 4 processor and old X600 card. Well, the X600 isn't that bad, but its sad when a mainstream notebook like the DV4000 will be getting a better video card than a desktop replacement. Same with their ZV6000 series, its also a desktop replacement and its sad to see it have a worse video card than the DV4000.

Their DV1000 also needs a video card, at least the X600. Toshiba's M50 series and Asus's W3V are both the same size and form factor as the DV1000 yet can be configured with a X600, no reason the DV1000 should be stuck with crappy Intel's GMA 900 graphics.

Come on HP, stop snoozing and get to work!!! Give some of your notebook series a better video card and processor. For example, at least give the ZD8000 an option for an Athon 64 and X800. This is a desktop replacement and so should have components as such.

Yeah i just seen that after i posted. I hate how they just dont post this stuff on the site. Another thing that is messed up is on the DV4000 overview it says "All dv4000s have two SODIMM slots for configuring up to 1GB of RAM." and when you customize you get the option "2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB)".

Son of a *****, the firewall at my workplace doesn't allow me to click through after I've configured it to my liking. Talk about making a guy freak out...first patiently waiting for a couple weeks for the new release, now having to wait until I get home from work tonight so I can finalize.

Meh, maybe it'll work out for the best, as I too am interested in the RAM specs. Depending on the responses to that question, I may just buy aftermarket RAM as opposed to having it pre-installed by HP.

By the way, and I know this has been discussed before, what's the maximum RAM capacity...1 GB or 2 GB?

i was curious about the memory question posted earlier, so i did a part search on hp.com for the dv4170us. i believe it uses the same type dimms as the new x700 version. i came up with 333 Mhz, pc2700, 200pin ddr. i'm not sure this is correct, but come up with the same type for several dv4000 models.

That would be a serious bummer if HP stuck with the same old, slow memory. I was hopeful that this would be another area of improvement with this new release, but if your statement is accurate then I feel like HP dropped the ball.....nearly everyone else offers far faster RAM on their latest releases, why not HP?

Hopefully (and I mean no disrespect) your wrong.

i hope i'm wrong to, i think i am mistaken. i thought the previous dv4000's had DDR2. apparently they don not. they have DDR. it must also be an upgrade in addition to the x700 (funny how it wasn't announced in the news release hp did for the x700 nor did pc mag. mention it in there review). i wish hp would give more detailed specs on there products. oh well it wouldn't be the first time i was wrong.

I know there's gonna be lots of people ordering a DV4000 with the X700, especially those from this site. I'll be waiting for a review or two of this new DV4000. :) I want to know how good this computer will be for gaming.

Meanwhile, I'll just sadly use my DV4000 with its Intel integrated GMA 900 graphics. :(

Nice! I'll be placing my order as soon as I get home from work tonight.

Comments on your config (as to how it'll compare to mine):

    - I'm going with XP Pro
    - Still unsure of RAM. May opt for the least amount possible, then upgrade with my own immediately upon receiving it. Nobody has commented as to if this is more cost efficient versus just getting what you want directly from the HP website configurator...so, comments on this anyone?
    - I'm going to stick with the Intel Pro 2200 B-G wireless chip, plus add Bluetooth. I'm leary to waver from the Intel version just from a performance and reliability standpoint, although it may not make any difference...not sure.
    - Lastly, what is the item you have listed as "hpshopping in-box envelope"? What does that mean exactly?

Otherwise, very nice, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. What's the expected ship date?

XP Pro - Is a better operating system over Home. I happen to have a license that I am going to move to my new laptop so I ordered home edition.

Memmory - Adding your own memmory is price effective, 1Gig DDR2 533Mhz Sticks start at $96.27 including shipping.

Pricing - Red03rr - coupon if your asking about my cost. Was not counting on the $50.00 mail in rebate though.

I'm not positive (nor do I know which configuration you were referring to as more than one have been posted), but I'm guessing that some of them are showing their price AFTER the deduction of the $50 mail-in-rebate and possibly include the mentioned $25 coupon that you may get after registering with/at the HP site.

you should DEFINITELY get your own ram outside, it's almost certainly cheaper. manufacturers rip people off with RAM prices. lol.

I'm saying that despite my getting the 1x512mb stick...It's just I'm too lazy to buy the 256 one and then have to try and sell it off and buy another one, that's just too tiresome for me lol...

    As for the pricing,
    1) I'm a student at CMU, so i got the Academic Purchase Program(APP) thingie;
    2) I haven't even applied the $50 mail-in rebate yet, so you can cut another $50 off my price lol.
    3) If you use the APP, you can't use the $25 coupon, but I saved $90 with APP anyway so who cares =)

as for how to get the APP thing, easiest way is just go to hpshopping and search for "education" =)

    good luck!

p/s yay now i get to put my specs in my siggie just like all those Notebook Deities out there!!! yay!! =) :hp:

yeah there you go, there's the 90 buck saving APP got me=)

btw, no the remote is NOT standard, notice the conspicuous lack of one on MINE...=)

oh, and i have NO idea what the "box-envelope" is, but i think it's not a carry case, if that's what you're wondering. because i didn't want one. It only showed up at the shipping page, nowhere before...lol...

No does not come standard, nor is it available via Web Based ordering atm... IF you want the remote you need to order via telephone. However it is confirmed that it works with the new edition of the Dv4000.

I'm thinking that I'll drop the RAM option to 256 MB, then order two sticks from Newegg or something so they're on-hand when the notebook arrives. Then I pop them in (assuming it's simple enough) and end up saving quite a bit of $$$ doing it right on the HP website. The money that I'm saving by going that route can and will be applied to something else, say an even faster CPU than I'd planned on.

My only concern is that nobody yet has been able to confirm the RAM specs yet. Does anyone know what the speed (e.g. DDR2 533 MHz PC4200)? I'd need to know for sure before ordering, so if you're only speculating or simply guessing, please don't respond.
