Hello. I just got a new DV4T. It starts up really slow. After the vista sign and welcome screen, a black screen comes up and stays for at least 90 secs before the desktop actually comes up. I have removed all the bloatware i can find and even updated via windowsupdate.com to the latest and greatest and yet this problem persists. Is this normal for this laptop? Also, the laptop freezes occasionally when i have FF running. Trying to open new tabs is sometimes impossible and even if i "X" out and launch a new FF, it tells me i already have it open. Shutting the laptop down is also challenging. It just does not shut down sometimes and even when it does, it takes a long time. Please advise.

Start > type in MSCONFIG > Startup TAB

    Remove uneccessary processes.

I do not think you got a lemon. Its just HP's bloatware making a mess.

Thanks flip. I know a thing or two about computers and have already done all that. I have less than 7 things starting up. I am down to essentials only. I guess the main thing that bothers me and i just cant figure out is that 90 secs between the vista logo disappearing and the desktop showing. I have other laptops that take only 5 secs for that transition.

When you uninstall the bloatware, it still leaves remnants behind. Have you tried using a registry cleaner?

If you can get hold of a Vista install disc, i strongly recommend you do a clean install. It will make your notebook load up windows in under 1 minute from a cold startup. I do this on all my notebooks as soon as i get it. I cant stand bloatware.

Finally figured out what was causing the 90 second delay in startup. Its a service called "quickplay background capture service qbcs". After a lot of trial and error, i finally disabled it from starting up with the computer and i now go from Vista welcome screen to desktop in 2 secs! Thanks Flip.
