Ok so i have a DVD+CD writer/reader in my laptop. I barely ever use it but i wanted to back up my iTunes library to a couple of DVDs this morning so i used Nero to do so. At 91% the drive started doing this thing where it would spin really quick, stop, start, make an awful grinding noise for a second, then repeat the same thing over again. After about 10 min of this, the CPU went up to 100% and slowed the computer down to the point where everything froze. So i tried ejecting the DVD but it didn't work so i used a pin to force it open. I tried 3 times on 3 DVDs with no luck..It did however burn a CD successfully which is weird.

Any idea what the problem is?

    Thanks

EDIT: I just tried burning another DVD and it stopped at 91% and started the grinding noise again then said the burning failed. Please help!

The laser can't track properly past that area. It could be laser going weak, physical misalingnment of the rails it is sliding on, motor gone bad, or something stuck inside.

It worked for a CD because the drive has two separate lasers - CDs and DVDs require different wavelengths and power levels. Since it burned a CD succesfully we can eliminate the motor or "something stuck" situation. It could still be misaligned, because CDs are less sensitive to laser alignment because their "tracks" are wider. Unfortunately you cannot realign it without specialized equipment, so it simply isn't worth it. You need a new drive.
