    Hi Everyone,

My first post here, After seeing the reviews i bought a DV5 1007tx recently.

All was running well until i tried to install XP (created boot disc, partition, slipstreamed SATA drivers etc) following online guides.

I ran the boot disc, setup Formatted the partition + copied files, the pc restarted to begin installation all was going well........Then my DV5 freezes at a black screen, with the H.P logo in the middle and 'press esc for boot options' in the lower left corner.

I cant get into windows, bios, boot/recovery discs don't help either. Pressing esc does nothing.

Can anyone help? I haven't got a clue what's going on, I hope I haven't stuffed my first laptop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same exact problem when I tried to install XP. Try taking out the hard drive and see if you can get into the BIOS. If that works, then you have to connect the drive to a desktop PC. Then format the drive and put it back in your laptop.

After that, use your recovery discs and then try to install XP again.

Follow this guide to take out the hard drive:

Iv'e removed the HDD, and can access basic diagnostics on the laptop with the HDD removed.

But im stumped now, as how to connect a notebook HDD to a desktop pc, do i need a special adapter or cable?

I finally got some cables today, hooked up the laptop HDD to my desktop and formatted all partitions... And yet again when i boot my dv5 im still stuck with the HP logo with 'press esc for startup options'

I've given up all hope of getting XP to work, now i would be happy if i could just reinstall vista!

If anyone has a solution please let me know.

    I have 2 questions:

Can you get into the BIOS without a hard drive?
After you formatted the drive, did you have a single block of unallocated space without any partitions?

When I had this problem, I did some research and it looks like it's caused by some sort of corruption on the drive. If I were you, I would try formatting the hard drive again.

After formatting 3 times with no luck i finally got my Dv5 working again by using kill disk to wipe the drive.

I've got Vista Going again, gonna do a lot more research before i attempt another xp install. :)

    Thanks again for your help
