Just picked up my DV5020 (Basically a DV5000 with certain specs. NOT a DV5000z). I think the screen is pretty poor. After reading so many great reviews of HP Brightview screns, I'm surprized. Let me explain...
The angle that you have to view the screen from to get decent contrast is very, very narrow. Its so narrow that it's not possible to sit at the laptop and see the whole screen clearly at once. If you put your head in exactly the right spot, you can get the middle of the screen nice and colorful; but the top and bottom aren't. The colors in the bottom part of the screen are washed out and pale, and up the top the dark colors all appear black. When the screen is all black the bottom third, and top corners, are very bright compared to the middle. If I have to read something in a corner, I find myself moving my head to get a better view of that part of the screen.
If you move back about 10 feet from the screen, and put your head in exactly the right spot the whole screen looks great, but you can't move it will wash out. From this position the bottom is only very slightly lighter than the top.
Of course, the dead sub-pixel doesn't help; but out of the last 4 LCDs I've owned I've totalled 8 dead pixels, so one dead is the best luck I've had so far! Sigh.
So, do you think 1) this is a dud; 2) the screens on this machine all suck 3) I have too high of a standard???
Ideas? Does anyone else have this problem on 15" HP Brightviews?

The DV5020US is part of the DV5000Z series.

Is it because you weren't familiar with the "glossy" screen? I had one, and I loved it.

Your screen is "fine", and your standards are not too high.
Laptop LCD screens that do not include a polarizer filter which has been optimized for wide viewing angles, will always exhibit a gradient effect (lighter at the bottom, darker at the top) and an inversion effect. The larger the LCD screen, the more pronounced the effect will be.
Some people confuse the lightness of the bottom of the screen when viewing a dark coloured background as light leakage; however it is most likely a result of the screen's limited vertical viewing angle , +15 degrees (above) / -30 degrees (below).
BrightView alone will not increase or reduce the effect, however other manufacturers couple a wide viewing angle polarizer filter with their 'glossy' screen laptops. -
thanks for your replies.
I dropped by Fry's after work today to check out other screens. All the 15" HP and compaq screens had the same problem, but they didn't look quite as bad as mine. In particular, I could not reproduce my white top corners on other HP screens. I wonder if mine is slightly worse, or (more likely) the bright lighting in the shop makes the screens look better.
What I noticed, for certain, is that the 15" HP screens were far inferior to most of the others. The 17" HP screens were wonderful, and all the Fujitsu's were briliant and even. The 15" HPs just don't measure up; and in my case look a lot worse in a normal lighting environment. I'm going to try and take mine into the store I bought it from, and compare it in the same environment just to make 100% certain that this is normal.
Thanks all.
Peace-out. -
if not satisfied pleaser return it in time.....therefore, will save you much headaches. Toshiba low ends even looks better than Hp's. For Xbright that is. Only problem is Toshiba's dont have models that are Turions and if they did it wont be too cheap.

All I know is I liked the Compaq V5000 screen. Hopefully my DV5000z will be the same...
Looking at the Toshiba's low screens...I thought they were worse then the V5000... -
Ok....now that I have the dv5000z I am noticing everything you have said...
Don't meant to bump this thread but I am upset...
Edit: They gave me a Matte Screen by mistake!
