Jumping in the game a bit late here, but...
Mine has been pretty good. Long battery life, fast, and relatively light. I still have the keyboard issues that are detailed in the dv8000 thread, along with the touchpad not responding sometimes. At one point during startup, the sound would not "mute" and in fact the volume would go up to max - despite the "mute" button being lit and the Windows sound manager thing in the bottom right corner showing the computer to be muted. For whatever reason it fixed itself eventually.
Other than those two, not a problem. Even at that, they're not horrendous, just a bit of an annoyance at times.

did you buy that from the store or from online? I am about to have my computer delivered wednesday and i am worried about all of these issues

Received mine from Costco 2 days ago, no keyboard, touchpad, sound problems.

I just went to Best Buy today and tested the keyboard on a dv5000, and at least 7 keys were not working at all! I even showed one of the guys who worked there, and he told me to "definitely not" get "this [dv5000] model." I tested the new dv6000z out, and everything seemed fine. A bit more expensive, but if it has a good keyboard, it's worth it. I returned my dv8000t one week after I purchased it because the keyboard sucked. And considering I only have used ONE dv5000 in my life, and it was only for about 7 minutes, and it ALREADY had issues with the keyboard, I would NOT recommend it at all. Unless, of course, you're willing to take the chance of getting a bad keyboard.

I would be happy with my dv5140us if it functioned as advertised. As it stands, I am not happy at all with my notebook.

Exactly. If this functioned as advertised, and forgetting the fact that it runs Windows, I'd be perfectly happy with my hardware. At the time I bought it on sale, it was a great deal. But the USB 2.0 ports are not operating at USB 2.0 speeds, the keyboard sticks, etc. etc. etc. Theres too many problems to list at 2:41am.

I recently bought my dv5000 machine and I like it. Yes there is a problem in the keyboard and the latch is not fight right, but despite that I don't find anything else to complain about.

I actually have had absolutely NO problems with the HPDV5000 series. I have had two; my first one was sweet, until someone mistaken it for a urinal. Yes, laptops are urine proof -- just incase you didn't know.
I have had my recent one for....8 monthes now, and no major problems at all. -
Hi Crispy and Zishu,
Some have had problems, some have not. I have had no problems with mine nor do I in any way regret my purchase. I have had many compliments on the screen and relative speed of my 5030 and can say that it is a solid and compitent machine. -
I completely agree with preachp. HP DV5000 rocks.

Got mine about a month ago. So far very happy - a good value for the price. Of course I'd love a tricked out top of the line built system, but for a consumer system I think it's at the top of the list. I'm a huge research geek, so I did tons of comparisons online, then went to Circuit City to compare all the makers, where I found I liked the HP and Toshiba models the best. Turned out I could get a better deal on built system at hp.com than with Toshiba, so I went with the dv5000T with core duo, 1gb ram, 80gb hd, 128MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400. I also picked up a Logitech Laser mouse that I prefer over the touchpad (don't like any touchpad, not just HPs!) Plan to get the expansion base and external drive and will make this my primay development system.

DO NOT BUY HP NOTEBOOKS
You change the OS, even to retail copy of XP Pro it breaks the warranty
don't believe me? ask HP tech support
Dell ships with Ubuntu Linux now
always buy the extended warranty on a new notebook ..... -
My mom has had hers (I think I posted this...) for over a year now. The modem just went out (but it was her fault for leaving it in during a thunderstorm). Other then that, it works like new. Looks like it too.
I had mine for a while until someone is college urinated on it and I had to replace itbut I never had any other problems with it besides that/

I bought one of these about 2 years ago.. paid about 1200 for it and ran into a lot of problems with it.. within 2 months the cd-rom broke and i had to send it in.. then it was fine for about 2 years.. no problems. So I can't complain about those two years. Now, after two years it has been nothing but problem after problem. First thing was the ram fried.. then my lcd monitor kept going on the fritz. I had to move it front and back several times to keep it from going white and then it just went only white. I figured out if I applied pressure to one of the corners it would work fine. So I jammed a wad of paper under the plastic to make that work.. I can't close the screen but I figured that was good enough to make it work and not spend another grand on a new laptop. That works fine.. but then a few days later the keyboard went on the fritz. It types on its own and whenever you press a key it spits out like 4 different characters.. ugh. But, I guess thats all for now. Pretty much I'd say I received a lemon.. usually laptops work more than 2 years. I bought a HP because I wanted to see what else is out there.. and I have always had Dells. After this experience I would say I am happy with the purchase so I know not to buy another HP again. Thanks HP. I'm sure some of your computers are fine but the one I got really "Invented" a new way of looking at your products.

I am a proud owner of DV6000tCTO, DV5000, DV8000 laptops and are only having slight issues with Ethernet port on DV5000. Video on dv8000 leaves strange stuff on the screen if left inactive aka not in use for period of time. as for the sticky keyboards, man you wouldn't have that problem if only you would stop jerking off in front of your laptop.
DV5000 are people happy with them or are there not many out there?
