    Hello,
I've had my DV5130ca for about 3 weeks now. Out of the box I noticed that the CPU load would either be 1-10% or 100% and it lagged like a 486 running Windows Xp.. I thought that it couldn't be right and I went about fixing it. I reinstalled from the backup partiton and I found that it worked a little better, though I still had some problems with the sound and video.
After fixing the video I went to work on the sound which I noticed was a bit choppy, cutting in and out at time and such. It was to my suprize that I found using the lineout fixed this problem.. I was shocked and the first thing that I thought was, "Oh no.. Hardware problem." after reinstalling some drivers that the HP support had directed me to I found the problem even worse. When running music and doing ANYTHING(Opening notepad for example) everything would become unresponcive and I couldn't do anything..But the music still played. I poped a pair of headphones in the lineout and WHAM! Everything zipped to life again as if nothing has happened..
Using the notebook with a headset is fine.. But if I don't use the headset it is completely worthless. I called Tech support after hours of fighting with the online help(Which I am pretty sure is a automatic service) and spend 3 seconds on it, telling him just what I had told the online support. As soon as I said that plugging the headphones into the lineout made the whole system zip back to its working state he had said what I wanted to hear from the online tech support for the hours I was fighting with them, hardware.
All in all I've had nothing but problems with this unit out of the box and am currently fighting to get a refund for some non-hp/compaq unit. The worst part is I'm currently moving around Canada and wont have a steady address for a little bit and can't send it in to be fixed..
I know many people back HP and say good things about them. This is what lead me to buy one in the first place but now I'm wishing I spent my money else where.

DO you have many programs running in the background. Maybe this kills the performance and causes the CPU load. Look in msconfig to see the startup items.
As for the sound card, it does look like static electricity to me. The headphone jack is often a source of static electricity and my guess is that you are taking it away when you plug the headphones in.

I bought one from Bestbuy, I agree I am disappointed with this HP product. I always had high regards for HP Brand but this notebook really is a bad product.

It gets very hot, makes noise and is slow!! I don't have time to place tech support call and there is so much data that I have on this right now that I can't even ship it to HP.

I am stuck but I certainly won't recommend anyone else buying this.

I highly recommend you guys reformat with just a flat out reinstall without any software installed but the drivers. this is the only way your going to get the computer running the way it should be. Everytime i buy a new laptop i reformat that thing right away as to not have all the crap and junk in the system. I think its my top priority to tell anyone who gets a new laptop or computer.

Yup, spend some time with the machines you buy. These are consumer notebooks and they are full of junk and stuff you don't like because they are cheaper than buisness notebooks. They should be fully functional, however, and many people here confirm it.

    Hi,

I know it may be too late replying to this particular topic but I did notice CPU usage keeps spiking oddly. I too bought the dv5130ca at bestbuy in May 06 and, I did buy the 3 year warranty 3 weeks later. Don't even get me started how 2-3 months later it dropped buy 400$.

Anyway so I was excited about Vista so I installed the beta back in June 06. Vista had a lot of issues with the Symantec Norton that came preinstalled with the XP Media Center OS and would not allow me to get rid of error messages Vista popped up. So I had to search and destroy all the locations Symantec positions itself on the HDD along with a Registry clean up and disabling Services. Note:Uninstalling Norton did not help

So long story short. Get rid of preinstalled softwares that you do not need or are not familiar with. Clean up the registry using 3rd party tools and disable services and startups that do not help you much.

I did not like the way HP has partitioned the drive and the fact that there were no recovery discs in it. I am gonna get me a MAC next time around, or if a Laptop is not an issue I would get a Sony PS3 and install an OS on that. I suppose Linux is preinstalled on the new PS3's or if not they might start soon. Ref: playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html
