CPU whines especially when OS idle, although it is not as noticeable as my previous dell m1330. Does every laptop now sort of have some this kind of CPU problems?

This should have been fixed long ago. Maybe you should call HP and get a replacement.

The high pitch sound of hp dv5t is not as noticeable as dell m1330 is, but when you put your ear near the top left of the chassis, you can definite hear it very clearly, Is that normal or just me being paranoid?

    maybe you're hearing your fan?

    HP notebooks aren't dead silent.

This happens on the Elitebook 6930p with the P8600 CPU as well.
Are you talking about this sound:?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuTRp2F0zRI

The only way around it would be:

    Use an AC adapter.
Use the High Performance ACPI profile.
Use a software to prevent the CPU from going into the "C5 mode".
Enabling bluetooth would also lower the pitch of the whine.

I have posted HP's follow up on this issue under the Elitebook 6930p thread created by BBGus.

Exactly the same sound, not as loud though, my CPU is P8600 too. Is this considered an defect or just common among dv5ts?

It's actually not that common. You should call up HP and ask for a replacement.

    my punjabi friend -

are there any notebooks that ARE silent? even ones with SSD's have some sound...

i agree that a lot of these are issues and need to be fixed but also i have seen so many people soooo overly picky at the slightest sound they hear.

if they want silence, they should turn their laptops off! ;-)

Hanji Paji, I have yet to see a notebook that is dead silent.

I use the NZXT Cryo LX notebook cooler and it keeps my laptops fan at low speed even after stressing the CPU for a few hours.

I don't think what most users are demanding is complete "silence" but the lack of irritating noises.

The high pitch noises emitted by a whining CPU is completely irritating.

    exactly!

here are the steps an HP consultant gave me, but it doesn't help at all!

    Phoebe :
Step 1 : Please follow the power drain procedure:

    1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
    2. Remove the Battery.
    3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
    4. Reconnect the AC adapter.
    5. Turn on the Notebook power.
    Phoebe : Step 2 : BIOS Reset:

    1. Turn on or restart the notebook.
    2. Press the F10 key when the "HP Invent" logo appears on the screen.
    3. Under Exit menu, select "Load Setup Defaults."
    4. Make sure the 'Yes' is highlighted and hit enter.
    5. Press F10 to save the changes.
    6. Make sure the 'Yes' is highlighted and hit enter.
    7. The computer should then shut down and reboot.
Phoebe : Step 3 : uninstall and reinstall Power Management in Windows vista, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, select Control Panel, and then choose Performance and Maintenance.
    2. Click the System icon to open the System properties window.
    3. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
    4. Click the plus (+) sign next to System Devices.
    5. Right-click the ACPI Fixed Features button and select Uninstall.
    6. Restart the system.

On restarting the system, Windows will automatically detect and install Power Management on the computer.
Phoebe : Step 4 : I suggest you to clean the vent part of the notebook where the notebook fan is present with a vacuum cleaner for any aculated dust that could be preventing heat dissipation. The best option to use the laptop is by placing it on a flat surface with proper ventilation so that it minimizes the notebook temperature. Or else place it on a thick flat wooden table/block. Wood absorbs certain amount of heat and minimizes the notebook temperature.
Phoebe : Step 5 : Here are some Useful weblinks.

Increasing System Performance Without Adding Memory in Windows Vista

Some Software Applications May Cause Windows to Startup or Operate Slowly

HP Notebook PCs - Preventing Programs from Starting When Windows Starts

Note :please copy the entire link and paste it in internet explorer.

Phoebe : If the issue perists after performing the above troubleshooting steps, I recommend you to perform the below troubleshooting steps.
Phoebe : Step 6 : Use the steps below to test the hard drive in a Notebook PC using the HP Hard Drive Self Test.

    1. Plug the AC Adapter into the Notebook PC.
    2. Press and hold the Power button for 5 Seconds to turn off the PC.
    3. Press and hold the F10 key while you press the Power button to turn on the PC. Release the F10 key after text is displayed on the screen of the PC.
    4. After the BIOS Setup Utility is displayed, use the Right Arrow key to select the Tools menu.
    5. Select Hard Drive Self Test
    6. Press the Enter key to start the test.

The result of HDD test will be either "GOOD" or "FAIL".
If the result is "FAIL", you need to replace the HDD of the notebook.
If tht result is "GOOD", please perform Startup repair of Operating system , which will only repair the corrupted Operating system files.(It will not erase the data in HDD.)
Phoebe : Step 7 : Use the following steps to repair Windows Vista using Startup repair:

    1. RE-Start the Notebook and press F8 at HP Logo.

    2. Select Repair Your Computer from Advanced Boot Options menu. This will open System Recovery options.

    3. Select Startup Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.

Phoebe : Step 8 : If the issue persists, after performing all the above troubleshooting steps, restore the notebook to Factory settings by using F11 recovery steps or using Recovery discs of the notebook.

If you have not changed operating system in your Notebook then you can perform F11 recovery whose steps are given below :

Restart the computer and keep tapping F11 key, when prompted and follow the onscreen instructions. Below are the steps for performing the F11 recovery:

    1. Restart the notebook.
    2. Keep tapping the F11 to initiate the Recovery options.
    3. The PC Recovery screen will be displayed. Select PC Recovery and press Next.
    4. In the next screen, click OK to access the Recovery menu.
    5. You will receive a screen explaining the System Recovery process. Click Next to continue.
    6. Once the Recovery process is completed, you will prompted to either restart or turn off the computer.

Note: I request you to kindly take a backup of all important Data before performing the Recovery. This Recovery will erase data.

Note: Restoring the notebook to factory settings will erase the data from HDD. Please take backup of important data from HDD before restoring the notebook to Factory settings.

Since All Core 2 Duo processors have this problem because of the CPU power state change, it is just some are not as obvious as the others, and some people are not as sensitive as others, I am considering switching to AMD if the replacement I get still have this CPU hissing/whining/buzzing noise.

It is lucky that you got quiet machines, I just went to Best Buy and put my ear near many machines. some are really quiet, while some have high pitched CPU hissing/whining. My dv5t is great except for this noise driving me crazy.

HP updated me on the issue. They say that they are aware of the issue and is working on a bios fix. They gave me a 8530w to try out (with the T9400 instead of the P8600) and the whining is still there. But its no where near as loud as the 6930p. I can't hear the whine unless I press my ear right against the keyboard and most of the time, the fan cooling the Nvidia FX770m drowns out any other sounds. However, as the price difference was too great, I settled on the 8530p which would be shipped next week. I had exchanged 5 6930p and i did notice that some whined louder than others. That beind said, its basically like the lottery in determining whether you can get one that whines at an acceptable level.

I'd say to wait for the next gen Intel core i7 to see if the issue is resolved if it bothers you too much.

I've had the whining ever since I first got the notebook. It did annoy me at first, but I guess I kind of got used to it, kind of like how I learned to sleep through my dogs barking. It doesn't bother me anymore.

I think I would try a third time, if the noise is still not within the acceptable level, I would give up on HP

    Is it the processor itself?

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 which is slilent. If i switched the CPU's would it fix the problem?
