Hi all- I'm hoping somewhere here might be kind enough to assist me. I have a DV5T that is 2 years old. For some reason, it shuts off randomly. This only happens when I am not charging it, and also I have noticed it happens when I am listening to music, or watching a video. However, when it is plugged in to charge, this random shutoff never happens.

I've considered maybe the battery is bad? I really don't know a lot about computers, so I'm not sure how long a laptop battery usually lasts. I did run the HP Battery Check, and it came back as "Good".

If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem could be, it would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT: Just another thought, the battery does charge when it is plugged in. When it shut off today it did so at 54% charge.

You say it only shuts down when un plugged...Are you moving it around, or is it still sitting on a flat surface? This doesn't sound like a battery issue. You can check your power settings, and set the battery to match plugged in and see what happens. This may drain your battery quicker, but might also be the issue, especialy if your listening to music, or watching a video and not moving the mouse.

What operating system do you have? I believe the DV5T came with Vista.

Thanks for your reply. When it happens, it's sitting on a flat surface, or in my lap- no moving really. I'll try testing the battery like that when I get home and see what happens.

    Yeah, Vista.
