    Hi,

Does anyone know how I can switch off the monitor only (i.e. the LCD screen only and not the whole comp) on the DV51015TX laptop?

    TIA

As far as I know, there is no combination of buttons that you can press to switch off the screen. However, I know two ways you can do this:

    1) I'm assuming you use Windows Vista. The first way is via the power plan. Go to Control Panel>Power Options. Find the power plan you're currently using and click "Change Plan Settings". Here, you can choose how many minutes/hours the computer will keep the screen switched on, until it switches off by itself, whether on battery or AC power.

    2) the other way is by using a "blank" screen saver. Just right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose Personalize. Choose Screen Saver, then select "blank" from the drop-down box. You can also choose how many minutes the computer will wait before running the screen saver.

Download WinBubble (program written and distributed by NBR member Lawrence). That has an option where it'll put "Monitor Off" in the right click context menu of "Computer" and it'll turn off your monitor.

Actually I was looking for this for use with Ubuntu.
All linux's distro's I've used just display a black screen (looks kinda stupid) while Windows is always able to turn off the display (on expiry of the selected time) so was kind of hoping there would be some obscure but easy way to actually turn off the monitor.

@Harper: How does this turn back on again once we've turned it off?

Just hit any key on the keyboard or move the mouse around.

If you're looking for a solution for linux, you're better off posting in the linux subforum.
