Got my first ever laptop today, looked great, started it up went through installing vista, seemed kinda slower than I expected, also got super hot, although raising the back did noticeably help. Install firefox, set up fingerprint scanner, everything going ok says need to reboot for updates to take effect, reboot and now my SCREEN IS BLANK/BLACK and nothing. I can hear the comp running but screens dead or something. Chat with HP rep online for about 20 minutes and she quickly offers to replace it, which has me thinking its a common problem and I may just get a refund and get an ASUS which I've been hearing great things about??? sucks too I live in San Jose, CA where HP headquarters is!!!! read my sig for the config, it was working for a whole hour, and 1 reboot its done....not happy.
Anyone had any luck with getting anything free or upgraded on replacements for the hassle???? please let me know......thank you

Hi there,
Accept the replacement from HP. Unfortunately these things sometimes just happen and they happen to the best people (I mean - your first laptop!).
Don't go for the refund. Although a lot of NBR members are pro-Asus, I think for this kind of money the HP is simply a more full-featured package and, despite this occasion, I have had much, much more luck with reliability and support with HP!
The dv5 is an excellent computer on a great platform. Once again - this is pretty crappy. But I would immediately go for the replacement.
Good luck,

All HP laptops I've owned have had hardware issues in some way or another so if this happened to me, it'd be the straw that broke the camels back and I'd take the refund (personally)

Is this really the notebook breaking or simply a Vista hiccup, what happens while trying to enter the bios upon reboot?
-
If you can access the BIOS and run from a Vista repair disk then it won't be an issue with the screen connection.
What if this just happens again with your replacement because of how you installed things?
Let us know if you're able to view anything and how it goes. Good luck. -
I think you just got a broken one - its definitely not common. I've gotten 2 dv5t and both have made me happy

I couldnt get to the bios because nothing would happen, you can hear the laptop start up it gets warm even, but the screen is completely black, no dim light or anything...also I doubt its how I installed vista, I literally went through all the install steps, added 4 fingers for the fingerprint reader, installed firefox, and that was it. After I did that it said please restart to update settings, I figured I wanted to see how quick the start-up was so I would restart it.....and now screens dead. HP people on the tech support were very nice, guy called today at exact time they said he would, however they asked a handful of questions and things for me to try and instantly said they'd replace it. I mean if they spent an hour troubleshooting and finally agreed to give a new one thats one thing, but after 4-5 steps and 15 minutes that was it. The only lights on it are the ones flashing and the HP logo still lights up, yay!!! hahaha starting to have second thoughts I'm trying to remain calm, sorry

Hello,
Looks like the already infamous Nvidia Graphics issue. If you have got a change, go for anthing but Nvidia chipset. HP laptop with ATI should be great!!
My 2 paise worth.
Regards,
Ravindra. -
the nvidia graphics issue only affected the 8x00 series graphics cards (like mine), NOT the 9x00 series

If you are in the 21days period after purchasing, just call the support(the online chat support is cool thought!) and they will provide you a reference number and send you an online label for Fedex, which you print and replace with your first labels on the original box.
And yes, you will get the current free upgrades for your exchange product. If the support person don't mention this, you mention it and he will say "yes", that's possible.
Also, if you used some coupon(rebate) when you purchased your PC, mention this and they will apply the same coupon(even if it's already expired). They will probably charge you the difference at the first moment, but when your new PC is shipped, they will pay you back the difference. So the whole proccess is free!
I know all this things because I returned my new dv5t in the 21days period and already gone through all that stuff and procedures.
Good luck, for more Qs just write
P.s HP support really cares.. Real fast, responsible etc. -

So the laptop was working just fine, you reintalled VISA and it stopped working and you received the black screen of death.. And you're blaming HP? haha.
I say user error on this one. -
yeah how exactly did you go about reinstalling the the operating system? Have you tried to remove the battery and unplug the machine. Then plug the machine again and try to start it?
-
Ohh nonono I didnt reinstall Vista, I simply just set it up for the first time. I went step by step like HP said, put the battery in, plug ac adapter in, start up computer, go step by step setting up Vista for the first time, get done with everything...says needs to restart for all new updates to be complete, I restart.....NOTHING. I didnt reinstall anything just started the computer up for the first time and on the first restart of the notebook (literally) all black screen. Computer was on for probably 30 minutes......20 setting up Vista and 10 minutes checking to make sure it was everything I ordered.....
Only thing I can say is HP has been great about replacing it.....however I'm gonna ask for a 2 year warranty for free now or I will return it (its within the 21 days) anyone have any ideas if they will/will not give it to me? I'm not asking for any free upgrades, only for them to stand behind product for 2 years.
And thanks for everyones opinions.....and really what did happen to nVidia they used to be the best now it seems like there like Firestone tires....on hella cars but going through huge recalls.......lol
*DV5t* Day 1 = Day broke (anyone have luck getting free upgrades for replacement hassle???)
