All right, so it seems that my CPU whine has gone away for some reason. (yay)

    Other two thngs.

Even on power saver mode (Vista x64) it seems like my fan goes on, goes off for 20 seconds, and goes back on again. The BIOS is set to fan off.

Other question. I know some other notebooks you can do this - turn the Mic jack into another output for 5.1 surround sound (as there are 3 jacks on the computer)

Sounds normal to me, you can't turn the fan completely off, you wouldn't want to do that anyway. Seems like the laptop is turning the fan on when it needs it, which for this notebook is very often, it runs hot.

you can try running HWmonitor to check temperatures when the fan turns on...

any word on the 5.1 surround sound, i'm interested to know if that is possible as well.

You should enable the fan to be "always on" in the BIOS so it runs very low and unnoticable.

It's actually annoying when the fan goes on and off because it's very audible...so try using it on "always on" mode and it will stay at a relatively low and mostly inaudible fan noise...
