I have a 2 1/2 month old DV5z that seems to run VERY hot. For example, right now I'm only using the internet, with the laptop on a cooling pad, but HWMonitor shows the CPU temp at 180F (83C) with a max of 193F (90C). I contacted HP who recommended that I update the BIOS, which I did, then said I could send it in for repairs if that didn't fix the problem (which it didn't). What kind of "repairs" could I expect from them if I did send my laptop in? Is this type of problem something that can even be fixed, or does it have more to do with the overall build of this computer?

i've faced the same issues (same temperature) in my 3 dv5z'
now i'm settled with a dv5t (P8400) which runs at 30c at idle and 35c while browsing internet.
so, as you're outa the 21 days replacement offer, your last shot is to send it for repairs, though i wonder myself what sort of repair would they perform, it's just the way it is. try to get a replacement/refund and go for a dv5t.

Nope, that's just the way the computer's built. HP is known for building awesome looking computers that serve as hot plates. You may be able to undervolt it to try to reduce temps, but I've never done it.

It sounds like a heatsink issue. You should check that out.

That's really weird. I don't think these notebooks serve as hot plates generally, just that SOME aren't built pretty well. I get lower temps on my dv5z, and others too. You might have had bad luck with your unit.

My temps: Usually 50c to 60c. Highest I had was 81c. Lowest was 41c.

I think some guy opened them up and found that the GPUs didn't have a proper heatsink. Maybe check that out?

@ above poster my temps: 36C-43C when watching movies, web surfing, typing documents etc. Peak - 71 C when gaming for 4 hours straight. Lowest - 33 C.

    IrstblBlis,
    Send your notebook into service.
It's not normal for your notebook to run that warm.

    See my earlier post.

There is definitely something wrong with that PC. I have a brand new dv7z with the fastest CPU available and it runs VERY cool.

I highly recommend you return it and get it fixed/replaced.
