I was looking at the HP website and noticed that the DV5z is no longer listed. Has it been discontinued? Will they replace it with something better maybe?

It seems like it has been discontinued. I'm not surprised, seeing as the dv5t/dv5z overlap with the dv6t in the targeted market segment. It was only a matter of time until HP burned through the extra inventory.

So there are chances that it might come back with updated GPU then? Or maybe a whole new model? If they do I hope they offer a 1920X1080 display. :D

    Yeah.

HP is making some bad desicions here. First the dv5t, then the dv5z... They are being dumb. They shouldnt get rid of the mainstream sizes, for the new 16"'s and stuff. They are going to end up hurting themselves.

You're all making assumptions. Are there any published articles that state HP removed the two product lines permanently?

They may have a lack of supplies or components. Maybe they are coming out with a refresh like they did with the DV7?

The possibilities are endless. I mean Tinderbox keeps getting delayed his/her order of a DV5. Lack of supplies?

I'm sure if they did in fact purposely remove it for other reasons than being back ordered, then they must have a good reason.

    That's just my 2 cents. :)

Seems to me that HP is emptying out the former Versatile Performance category.
They renamed it to Everyday Computing just before drop kicking the dv5z.

Maybe they are going to lose it entirely? Their upcoming dv2 would slot into their ultra-portable category. Is their anything in the pipes that could be dubbed an Everyday Computing machine?

ooh, really? a dv2. lol. cool.

They are making all these newer, or less common sizes and getting rid of the regular ones...

I went and did an online chat with some lady from HP to inquire about the DV5z and she said that its no longer available. Of course this is probably somebody from India I was talking to so I took it with a grain of salt. Anyway I'm still hoping that it's just an update that they are doing. I am not convinced with the new 16:9 screens they are putting out on their laptops. I really don't like the resolution they put out unless its 1920X1080 at least. I guess we'll see sometime soon.

I'm sure its because they can't get anymore 16:10 screens (1280 X 800) which IMO is much better then the 16:9 crap screens they are pushing out. Its cheaper for the LCD vendors to manufacture and they probably share those savings with HP. So everyone's happy except the consumer that is left with less vertical space. Personally, I would go with a larger screen then deal with the newer 16" 16:9.

That's true. 16:9 screens are cheaper to produce. I think HP is going to make all their notebooks 16:9. They are getting rid of their old supplies of 16:10 screens. They just got rid of the dv5z and dv4z. They also changed the HP mini line from (1024 x 600) to (1024 x 576) and the dv7 from 17" to 17.3". So I think 16:9 will become the new standard.

It was sad to see the dv5t go and it looks like the dv5z as well is now gone. These notebooks haven't even been on the market for 1 year and HP has cut them down ! :(

What I want to know is couldn't HP have just gone with the 16:9 ratio screens last year (when they launched the dv5 line). If it is true that it is cheaper to manufacture these vs 16:10 ratio then why not go with them in the first place and given us a 15.6" screen instead of the 15.4".

For me personally I do not want any screen larger than a 15" on a notebook so these new 16" screens just don't cut it in my book.

Add me to the list of those who think HP is shooting themselves in the foot by leaving a hole in the middle of their laptop lineup where a midsized but graphically powerful machine should be.

As for LCD availability and cost, I am guessing it's only the 15" and up where 16:10 panels are at issue. The DV2, DV3, and DV4's all still show 1280 x 800 as their only display options. The 1366 x 768 size is just not that useable for a lot of web browsin, much less software development.

I feel pretty fortunate to have grabbed my BTO DV5t when I did in early January. It's still sitting on my dining room table, awaiting me to swap in a new HD (320gb/7200) and install Windows XP, which I hope to do this weekend (with a thanks to all those who have sorted out the issues and process here) and set up for game development .

sad to see them discontinue the dv5 line :(

not only that, the G60 and similar replacements are either too inferior or overpriced to the dv5

Wow, I wouldn't mind the newer modles if they had a 1080p option for display. Only reason I got a dv5 was for it's 1680x1050 res. Seems like that option is reserved for the HDX line though...

The reason is that the LCD makers changed over their process in making the 16:9 this year. Basically, they can cut out more displays from a panel with the newer resolution and make more $$. I don't look at the 16" as being "bigger" as you say. In reality, they will make things look smaller since the vertical space is reduced which is what most people use and need... eg.. internet, web sites, powerpoint, etc.. all gain from more vertical space. What HP did to compensate in the increased horizontal space was to include a 10 key pad.. which may or may not be wanted by consumers. Personally, I think that is a plus. But going from the 4:3 display to 16:10 was bad enough. The 16:9 reduces vertical space too much. I would go with a larger screen with a higher resolution. One of the mods was suggesting that the 16:10 would be available on higher end business machines but I don't feel that will happen. I think it will be pretty hard to impossible to find a 1280 X 800 resolution much longer. Which is really too bad since that fits a 720P movie perfectly. The newer res is odd scaled and has zero advantages other then saving money for the glass makers. My fear is with PC sales down and margins getting thinner; manufacturers will cut back even more on components and QC may take a dive
