I have a new DV5z with the AMD Turion zm-84 and ATI radeon 3450. When I'm running on A/C power and on the high performance mode, the fan runs constantly. When I'm not even using the computer and it's sitting at idle, it still runs! It's loud...louder than a 2008 notebook should be IMO.

Is this a defect? Why won't the fan ever stop running?

There should be a setting in the BIOS for fan always on.. take a look and try turning it off. Your laptop may end up getting too hot for your taste in which case you can always switch it back on. :)

I have the dv5t and also have a loud constantly running fan. Its really annoying. You can do the bios change, to disable: fan always on as dannyres said above but that hasn't proven to be the best solution in my opinion. If you do that you have the fan whir up every few minutes, which can be just as annoying.

I'm thinking about calling hp to see if they could repair it or even to determine if its normal. Worst thing is, if its defective, id be without a computer for at least a week or two.

Anyone with a dv5t or dv5z, how loud is your fan?

Thats normal. The DV5 t and z are both known to get pretty hot, since cooling on these notebooks isn't as stellar as other notebooks.

Yeah, pretty normal, but not really healthy. My dv5z baked itself to death, I still need to rescue some files off it before sending it back for repair.

AMD Mobile CPUs run hotter than current Intel Mobile CPU. That's why I never buy AMD based notebooks, they're several generations behind Intel.

Add to that you have the ATI Radeon 3450 which adds more heat to the system.

HP notebooks are also known to be hotter because they don't have good heat dissipation like other makes like Apple, Lenovo, and even Dell.

Your best bet would be to buy a notebook cooler. I myself have the NZXT Cryo LX and my notebook does not feel as hot to the touch as it used to.

how loud is the fan on your notebook though? is it easily heard in a small room for example or is it silent but constantly working only heard when you put your ear to it?

i mean i can hear my fan working anywhere i am in my room, think the OP has a problem with how loud the fan is, not just the heat.

For me, it's not really loud, but a little, in a quiet room, but pretty silent otherwise.

I have an dv4z and the fan noise is nearly inaudible.

OP - I suggest using the "HP recommended" power setting instead. If the noise is still unbearable, you have a defective fan that needs to be repaired.

I had a heat-sink fan that constantly ran VERY loud after I had it about one week. Was very hot too. Sent it in and turned out the fan was defective. Could be that, or maybe it was improperly installed. I know HP has several ham-fisted repair techs who butcher everything they touch. They probably have a few of those in manufacturing as well.

It's worth getting checked out if it's running hot because, over time, heat is a laptop killer.
