I bought a WD 500GB USB3 drive yesterday for backup purposes. But very disappointingly, my laptop doesn't seem to recognise the USB3.0 part. If I connect it to either of the two USB 3.0 ports, windows pops up saying "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB 3.0 port".
But it already *is* in a USB 3 port!

Any idea what's wrong and what I should do??

Just to be sure, do you use USBs on the left side of the laptop? Have you installed renesas 3.0 USB drivers? sp55102.exe
