baii has been helpful to me on my other thread, but I figured this would get more attention from other users too.

I've been trying to OC my CPU to play Skyrim. I have a dv6-61xx series with an A6-3410MX, 6520G with a 6750M discreet.

I found an OC guide ( Awesome Llano Overclocking Tool - techPowerUp! Forums) that was helpful, but ran Furmark and Prime 95 and temps got up to 92 degrees. Out of curiosity I reset to factory voltages and settings, and running both those tests the temps went up slower but they still got up to 87 degrees. Is something wrong with the cooling or is this normal? Any way to cool it off? At this rate I can't play normal games without OC'ing...

Which exact model are you referring to? dv6-61xx doesn't tell us much use your part number on hp and find out which exact model you have and other can look from that model number and see what might need to be done or can't be done to reduce heat. Apart from removing the CPU and GPU cooler and reapplying thermal paste is another way to improve thermal conductivity as well as clean out your cooling fin and fan by blowing out the dust to see if there is any to improve air flow in the laptop which in turns improve air flow.

    Thanks for the reply.

    It's a DV6-6128ca, 1.6ghz quad core turbo-ing at 2.3ghz.

I played around a bit today and with undervolting/overclocking P1 (left P0 at 2.5ghz) to 2.0Ghz at 1.0325VID, testing Fur Mark and Prime95 at the same time got it up to 81 degrees at the most. Is that a decent "highest" temp to go to? GPU was around the same.

So did you do a BIOS update Version:F.21, 5.85M as well? Also are you running x64 O/S? I would set all to default first to diagnosis the problem before undervolting/OC. You need a base line to test to find out where the problem lies first before doing any other task. But as long as your temp is up but not over the limit as when you play a game such as Skyrim that should and would task your system and will bring up the temperature other then from normal usage. But if the computer should be starting to shutdown then there is a thermal heat exchange problem somewhere and should be fixed ASAP as that could lead to more serious problems seen and unforeseen to happen. I would try Skyrim in default not OC mode and see how that plays first before going OC as that will drive up voltage and increase the temp and most likely cause the fan(s) to kick in sooner to cool the system down.

The dv6 is hot by design , best you can do is clean the vent/ repaste.

If cpu intensive gaming does not exceed 85ish then it will be fine.

What setting you run the prime 95 with furmark? Assume 25ish ambient, If it is large fft, the cooling is in optimal state, if small fft, then it is typical.

Stormjumper: I just re-flashed bios as per HP's site. The high temps were with F.21 I think? It was as per the OC guide I listed but then I went back based on baii's recommendations. x64 OS. Honestly it's never presented any warnings or the like and it wasn't until recently that I started paying attention to it. I ran Hitman on high settings with 2x MSAA and tessellation as well as 4x AS filtering and it got up to 83 at the highest after about 40 minutes, immediately dropped down when in a menu or the like. I would assume some of the huge crowd scenes in Absolution outweigh Skyrim? Never had it shut down on me either.

I reset the settings to baseline and they were actually around the same if not higher, I think undervolting helped? The highest it got running furmark and prime95 was 81 degrees after about 30-40mins, even running the baseline test before it was somewhere around 85.

baii: Thanks I might try repasting. Good to know about the temp though. Not sure, just ran default torture test with 4 threads.
