I am a little worried about the relatively high temps the dv6 generates....has anyone compared it to the sony vaio s15 (more expensive) or the asus n56vz (max 8gb ram) or the lenovo y580 or the samsung np7005 series?
I need the i7 processor and an nvidia graphics chip for my editing software . Obviously the combo generates lots of heat....just don't want it to melt internal components (very common problem for some older hp models).
This will not be used for travel so I don't need thin and light. Bigger laptop equals better cooling? Any other suggestions?
p.s. I am seeing less talk about high heat in the dv6 discussions of late. Maybe they are doing a better job with cpu thermal paste or have tweaked the fans?

Go for Sony S15 if you need stunning display, Y580 for higher GPU power. N56VZ seems to be a little better built, but remember it only has DDR3 GPU RAM, which means 5-10% slower than GDDR5 version. I don't know much about samsung. But if built quality and temperature are your first concerns, try MSI GE60 perhaps? MSI Laptops are basically designed for gamming, so there should be no problem, and you mentioned you don't use it for travelling, the extra weight, thickness won't be a complaint.

Also consider the Sager NP6165.
DV6 ivy bridge alternatives? S15, y580,n56vz?
