I have a 6426us which HAS the combo right headphone jack/SPDIF jack. SPDIF is silkscreened just right of the jack. When you insert a mini-toslink optical jack, it lights as long as the machine is powered on (as opposed to only during output). I don't know about YOUR model, but if it does NOT have a silkscreen label, I WOULD ASSUME YOU DON'T HAVE IT... It would be optical in ALL CASES... not electrical, so you could also try inserting a cable jack

yeah i have an optical cable that i inserted to both headphone jacks.. neither of them turned into optical out.. and there's nothing in the windows sound playback properties that lists optical out :(

i don't know what u mean by silkscreen label

I think you are pretty much out of luck. When I say silkscreen, just think a label on the right side of the rightmost headphone jack. There is no software indication other than it can pass PCM or Dolby 5.1 when using HP Quickplay... There was a lot of manuals that said it was supported, and MAYBE certain versions actually did ... many did not.

I successfully have 5.1 surround sound by hooking up my old Dell 5650 - 5.1-channel speakers using the two headphone jacks on my dv7tqe. Granted I cannot control the level on each speaker.
