My external usb powered 2.5" drive acts all crazy and files keep getting corrupt. Ive removed the 2.5 inch drive from the enclosure and tested it in a desktop pc and it came back fine and functions perfectly when installed in the desktop, so im assuming that its not getting enough power when running on usb power...
The hard drive is a 2.5 inch 7200 RPM 750 gb Hitachi and it states 5V 800mA on the drive but the enclosure is just a old USB 2.0 enclosure with a standard usb2.0 cable. Could that be the issue? Not enough power through the usb 2.0 cable even though its plugged into a usb 3.0 port? i thought that usb 3.0 ports put out about 900mA... I was gunna go out and get a new usb 3.0 enclosure but am worried it will just produce the same outcome....
So i was wondering if anyone knows what the power output is for the USB 3.0 & 2.0 Ports on this DV6-6100?

USB 2.0 - 5V 500mA
USB 3.0 - 5V 900mA -

you could try exchange external hdd. single head cable with two usb head cable which can provide required additional power.

USB ports power can be reduced via power settings in Windows. Also only a USB 3.0 device in a USB 3.0 port can draw 900mA. -
Would someone be as kind to post a screenshot of what the USB devices look like in the device manager. As all my ports seem to say 500mA per hub. None of which say 900. I've checked all power settings and none are reduced.

I have/purchased an enclosure off of eBay for a 2.5" HDD. Pretty much the same thing you are talking about, I would imagine - turns the drive into an external USB 2.0 drive. Though the USB cable that came with it, actually has two ends on it. A micro-USB end, connects to the enclosure and two ends branch off of it to connect to two empty USB ports on your PC. I am assuming it is because of the power it requires? Kind of makes sense to me. I would think that finding/using that sort of cable, would solve your issue pretty quick.
Instead of purchasing a USB3.0 enclosure, why not just save your pennies and go for a full-blown USB3.0 portable drive? Data transfers/rates off of it are amazing. It's almost like having a second onboard SSD. -
What portable USB 3.0 powered drive would you suggest? -

I would also check on eBay for a new USB 2.0 enclosure (one with the right cable). They are less than $10.00USD. No sense, like you mentioned, letting a good HDD just sit. -
Guess what the Renesas does not have a power tab, but it does provide up to 900mA... -
