When running on ac, everything is fine, the laptop runs for hours and hours, no issues.
However, if on battery, third party, 9 cell, it will run for a varying amount of time, sometimes more than an hour, sometimes 5 minutes, then it will instantly and completely shutdown, with a little click. No warning, no battery low message, just instant off. It will restart when the power button is pushed a few minutes later.
Is this an overheating issue, or something else?

Why does this only happen on battery though, would it not get hot on ac too?

I think it runs okay on the original battery, is it some problem with the 3rd party battery? I previously had a 12 cell battery that I returned for this same issue, replacing it with the 9 cell which seemed better for a while, but not anymore.

Appreciate nay advice you can give.

Means bad battery....3rd party batteries are notorious for good and bad. What you described what the battery was doing is a sign of a poor battery and you need to get a OEM matching HP battery then you will avoid 3rd party battery problems.
