I'm currently having troubles with a recently purchased HP Pavilion DV6000 series [dv6618ca] notebook (purchased about 3 months ago). My issue has to do with the touch-sensitive buttons above the keyboard. When either the mute button or the volume increase/decrease buttons are pressed, my notebook freezes, although I'm still able to move the mouse using the touchpad (however it becomes fully dysfunctional).

So far, I've realized that if I change the volume using the sndvol.exe file, the computer does not freeze, but I would still like to fix this issue because using the exe file gets very annoying.

Hopefully someone out there knows how to resolve this issue, and your help is greatly appreciated.

Have you installed new drivers since your previous post?

no i havent because I am not sure which ones i must install/reinstall, or which drivers my laptop is compatible with.

However, I have tried updating the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" > (Conexant HD-Audio SmartAMC HD2) driver through the Windows Device Manager, with no luck. I simply get the "driver softward for your device is up to date" message.

What OS do you have? I'll take a look for a sound driver.

This has got to be the strangest solution I've ever witnessed.

I tried using my HP IR remote control to replay a song on WMP, and to my surprise it worked! Then I thought I might as well once again (hopelessly) try to use the touch-sensitive buttons to pause/play the song, and that somehow worked too! The remote control seemed to have fixed my problem because now all the buttons are fully functional!
Still, thanks jin07 for attempting to help me solve my problem. I can finally use my laptop now without worries of it freezing!

Huh. That's great. Weird, but great. Well saves me the time of getting the driver.

go into the task manager. (ctrl alt del) then go under prosecces and end the hp quickplay on screen display.. that kind of fixes it , but you need to do it every time you turn on the pc

This is a permanent fix that you can undo if you wish.

To disable the on line Volume Display causing the slow down / freezing issue without uninstalling any software: (It’s also easily reversable)

    1. Click the Vista start icon, bottom left.
    2. Type RUN in the Start Search box, ENTER.
    3. Type MSCONFIG in the OPEN: area, Click OK.
    4. Click on Continue if asked.
    5. Select the StartUp Tab in the System Configuration menu.
    6. Remove the Checkmark from the HP Quicktouch On Screen Display item.
    7. Click on OK and Restart if required.

Reverse above procedure to restore to original if desired

Edit: I would have pointed you to a thread where I have posted this before but the darn search feature is missing again and I can't locate my posts.
