If you want to compare your PC to others, you better specify at least your Operating System (XP/Vista), your Bios version and your hard drive! Else you are going to compare apples with pears.

I notice mine is rather warm too, but it's normal, especially if you just got the computer - the indexing and defraging when you first run Vista puts the hard drive to heavy use for the first few days. After that, drive activity will drop off and it shouldn't be too bad.

Try not to block the vents under the hard drive if it's on your lap or a flat surface. My model has a 12-cell battery so it sits up a bit and that helps when I'm at a desk or table.

I have dv6000z that has a 80GB Seagate Momentus 5400.2 in it, and before i got a cooling pad, the HDD temp. used to be between 48-53. With a cooling pad it's now between 35-42, depending on what the room temperature is.
HDD temp. being in lower 50's is not dangerous at all to the hard drive. It's just that on these HP models the hard drives are located right under your left palm area, which can be quite uncomfortable.
Get a cooling pad and the left hand area will only be slightly warm.

The harddrive on my dv6000 stays around 50-60 with a cooling pad :(
The processor can hit 75C when playing games.

This is what Seagate says about their Momentus hard drives:

    Ambient temperature:
Ambient temprature is defined as the temperature of the environment immediately surrounding the drive.
Actual drive case temperature should not exceed 65 C (149 F) within the operating ambient conditions.

    Operating: 5 to 55 C (41 to 131 F)
    Nonoperating: -40 to 70 C (-40 to 158 F)
