After loads of fun I have managed to get my DV6000 downgraded with XP. This is a brandnew (new-out-of-box yesterday) customized from HP.

I have tried repeatedly to install the sound drivers, LAN drivers and Modem drivers with no avail. All drivers were download from HP's site, are for XP, but they all fail to install. They all fail to recognize the hardware.

The only info I can find about downgrading to XP, speaks more about dual booting with Vista or all the fun times getting SATA to work (which I did BTW)

Has there been a change in the chipsets recently or am I missing something?

All I can tell is that it's a dv6000 since it was customized..i guess they don't give an exact model#.

    Intel 1.8 core duo
    Go 7400

I did get the LAN working (helps when you use the right driver), but sound is being a bear.

As for SATA, it was a big pain in the butt. You must slipstream the SATA drivers into your XP CD.

    1. Get the SATA drivers
    2. Use nLite to slipstream/copy the driver files and create an ISO.
    3. Burn ISO on CD
    4. Boot off CD and install XP.

That is the 20,000ft view of how and of course each step has another 20 steps.

There is an easier method to install the SATA controller if you have a floppy drive.

To use the diskette during a new operating system installation, complete the following steps:

NOTE: A diskette drive is required to use this driver. If an external diskette drive is used, ensure it is plugged into the system.

    1. Insert the operating system CD and Power On the notebook to boot from the CD.
    2. At the very beginning of the operating system installation, the following prompt is displayed at the bottom of the screen: "Press F6 if you need to install a SCSI or RAID driver...." When the prompt is displayed, press F6.
    3. Later in the operating system installation, you are notified that a mass storage device could not be detected. When this notification occurs, press S (S=Specify Additional Device).
    4. When prompted, insert the diskette that was created from the SoftPaq file, and then press Enter.
    5. Select Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M) and press Enter.

NOTE: At this point, the following prompt MAY be displayed, depending on the version of your operating system CD. If the prompt is displayed, press Enter to use the default Windows driver and continue, if it is not displayed, simply continue with Step 6. The prompt reads as follows:

Windows already has a driver that you can use for "Intel (R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI controller (Mobile ICH7M)". Unless the device manufacturer prefers that you use the driver on the floppy disk, you should use the driver in Windows. S=use the driver on floppy ENTER=use the default Windows driver.
    6. Continue with the operating system installation, as prompted.

Enable SATA as IDE than after install IDE as SATA in BIOS to install XP onto SATA drive. Get drivers for "t" suffix model, "z" is for AMD, "t" is for Intel on HP's site i.e. dv6000t. Take care.

    Randy,

I'm following these steps and everything is great. Seems to load the proper SATA drivers then proceed to the Windows setup menu. At that point, it STILL says I don't have a hard drive on my system. Also, going into my bios, it won't allow me to change or even see any SATA options. Any clue?? I gotta XP to dual boot on this machine or I'm pretty screwed.

    THanks
    John
