Have a DV6000 that keeps switching between two monitors, Generic Non-PnP Monitor and Generic PnP Monitor, or at least I think that is what it is doing. Thing is there is only one monitor hooked up, the laptop monitor itself.

Every time it happens I can hear the beep of a new device being hooked up and the resolution changes. If I check the resolution settings it shows multiple monitors and switches back to one that says 1&2 multiple.

What would be the cause of this? I'm only seeing 1 driver installed but under the device manager I am seeing..

    Monitor:
    - Generic Non-PnP Monitor
    - Generic PnP Monitor

then it happens and it shows

    Monitor:
    - Generic Non-PnP Monitor
    - Generic Non-PnP Monitor
    - Generic PnP Monitor

    Anyone have any clues?

    Using Win7 32x

    Edit:

I can disable both non-pnp monitors and it just continues to happen.

give us the exact model of the dv6000 that you have. I have seen some really weird things like this come out of faulty Nvidia chips right before they die.

Your system has GMA950 graphics. In Device Manager->Display adapters there will be a second entry which corresponds to the external port on the unit (vga out?). Try disabling the second device which I believe will eradicate your second monitor from appearing in Display properties.

I don't see another driver listed under display adapters, but I did try and disable the only driver listed and that seemed to work for a temp fix.

Basically now the laptop is fine but it's functioning with no driver, the resolution is horrible and if I drag something across the screen it lags/ghosts. But now I can actually use it, before it was flashing so much I couldn't even get screen shots.

Check out the attached images and let me know if you see something out of place. I'm not sure if that driver is correct also, will try that now.

    Edit:

    driver seems to be correct

Try updating/reinstalling the graphics driver and see if that fixes it.

you have intel graphics so that makes it about 90% less likely you are having HW issues. those dv6000s still get a little hot (the intel ones not as much as the AMD/Nvidia ones) also try flashing the BIOS ( WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with Intel Processors) - Microsoft Windows/Vista-Based HP Pavilion dv6205us Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) ) and performing a hard reset (take the battery and the power cord out of the system, hold down the power button for 30 seconds, plug the power back in and boot it up) you should also try looking for an upgraded driver as previously recommended, here is the newest one HP has, you may find something newer from intel.
