I would not want to be running High Perf mode on a unit that is prone to component failures due to overheat.

On the contrary, High Performance does not allow the cpu to throttle. With the cpu running at full tilt comes excess heat. You are essentially defeating the purpose of SpeedStep/PowerNow when doing this, and gaining nothing.

Sorry to sidetrack but since we're on the topic of wireless on the hp dv6000 - I'd like bring up that my wireless switch feels kind of loose/flimsy.

I haven't actually used the switch a whole lot (since I got it around last year), but I've only recently noticed it and it kind of makes me unnerved about using it since it 'feels' so fragile :S

I wonder if anyone else has experienced the same thing

Is this supposed to be normal?

    kindest regards,

    J

If you can't even see the wireless card as a device inside of device manager and even after you uninstall and reinstall the drivers it still doesn't show up inside the network management and the device manager then you'll have to send the laptop in and the motherboard and wireless card will have to be replaced.

I owned a DV6000z laptop and the wireless card broke on it. The problem is the motherboard and its connection with the wireless card, because even after they sent me a new wireless card it still didn't work. I had to send it in and they had to replace the motherboard and wireless card. This is a known problem with the laptop and HP has issued a statement and extended the warranty on the laptops known for this problem. I'll have to find the thread for this, because it is located here in the HP forums, but I would call HP immediately and talk to them about getting it fixed via the warranty.

Thanks flipfire for the lightning fast response.

I also noticed that my dv6000 takes a little long to establish a wireless connection.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Would it help speed things up if I were to use a static IP address?

Envision: thanks for finding the forums - sadly however, my machine isn't listed for extended warranty

PS: who else has flimsy/loose wireless switches?

We repair about 6-10 a week of these machines. The issue is heat related .The wifi chip and the north bridge chip are both prone to warping. This breaks the joints to the board.

We find we have to reflow the boards and increase the cooling profile runnng the fans faster and earlier to keep it as cool as poss.

    See www.notebookrepair.co.uk

    Good luck guys

I have a DV6000 that is going back this week for its 3rd mother board. That is on top the replacement I got after they lost my first laptop when I sent it in. Needless to say that will be the kids laptop when it gets back.

Im kinda pissed to see that the F730US COmpaq wasnt in the coverage for this defect. It has the same wifi card as the dv6000 and mine died lol. I guess cheap compaq's arent covered for anything lol. It lasted 1.5 years so i wasnt terribly mad for the 450 dollar price.

    Bring on the DV6!
