I recently did a re-install of everything using the recovery partition. However, now the little remote that sits in the express card slot doesn't work. The signal is being sent. I know because I can see the IR signal using a video camera, but the laptop is not receiving the signal.

I tried looking in the Human Interface Devices section of Device Manager, but the only thing I see that might be close is an "HID-compliant consumer control device". Nothing about infrared.

I'm thinking maybe I just don't have drivers installed for the IR port. Would anyone else be willing to look in their Device Manager and tell me what they have listed there for their IR port?

"HID-compliant consumer control device" - both entries on mine refer to the Quick Launch Buttons when you get into the tabs and read the descriptions.

In the device manager, look under system devices. You should see the "consumer IR devices."

    Did you see:

    Enable an infrared connection

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

If your computer's infrared capability is not working, infrared might be disabled. If you have infrared technology installed on your computer, here's how to enable an infrared device:

Click to open Device Manager.* If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Double-click Infrared devices.

Right-click the device, and then click Enable.

It's fixed now. Sorry, xvvvz, but your instructions didn't help.

What did help was a suggestion from a tech at HP. After checking with two supervisors, she suggested I update my BIOS. I was reluctant, because I like F.16 and didn't want to upgrade to F.27. I did it anyway, though, and it fixed the IR sensor. I still didn't want F.27, so I downgraded back to F.16. And what do you know? The IR sensor still worked! I guess the BIOS update was enough of a kick in the pants to get it working again.

Anyway, problem solved. Hopefully this solution will find its way to someone else with a similar problem. Again, the infrared express card remote stopped working (the sensor on the laptop was what stopped working) after I did a full re-install from the recovery partition. A BIOS update fixed it.
