    Hello,

My power button stopped working all of a sudden (very wierd).

I now have to use the quick play button to turn my laptop on from shut down (this is all it does since I have Vista and quickplay does not wpork).

Any ideas on why the button is not working? could it be related to the speakers not working?

    TIA

    hi

i have exactly the same problem, the power button wont work properly and the speakers dont work (although i can plug in headphones and external speakers which work fine... so its not the sound card...)
the power button would work if i pressed very hard on the button and the area around it....
so i have to use quickplay to load it... but for some strange reason through quickplay when i select windows it hibernates.. apart from the odd occasion like right now..

im no computer wizz, so i dont know a fix... does somebody else know?

obviously its either the button, the wire/plug connecting to the board or something on the board itself. only way to sort this out would be to open it up it seems.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? It appears to be quite a common thing with the 6000 series. I have a 9000 series, which I think uses the same power switch circuit board. I haven't had the problem yet, however, I am anticipating it. The nice thing about it is that the laptop will still function without the card at all. I'm trying to locate a replacement board for a friend's 6000. If I find a source for one, I will post info here.

In the meantime, the workarounds are as follows:

    Using the quickplay buttons:

Press either quickplay button, and as soon as the machine posts, press CTRL ALT DEL and it will restart and boot into windows normally.

If you have the optional remote control, you can use it to power on and power off your laptop. If you do not have one and wish to use this option, they are available on the HP website for around $15 US. I think that is plus shipping.

I was fortunate with my 9000, it came with a remote, and it is the same remote that the 6000 uses. This does not, however, help with the speakers not working.

My friend found that if you press VERY hard on the area around the switch, the speakers will work, but only whilst pressure is applied. Just as a previous poster noted that if you press very hard on the switch, the machine will start.

As I stated previously, I will attempt to find a replacement switch board for my friend and I will post pictures and instructions on replacing it if this corrects the issue.

I have the same problem no power and no speaker sound, the only way to turn on the power is to press both the bottom and top panel together to get a contact, if you have it on the sound won't work, I send it in and HP want $321.10 to fix it. So this is an HP problem and they know it and won't fix it for free........

The board that the speakers and power button are located on is not hard to replace on the laptops. You can go to HP.com and get the service manuals for your laptops and follow the instructions. You'll save a ton of money doing it yourself and like I said, it's not that hard to do.

Temporary solution to this problem is to get a remote control. Remote works only if the laptop is hibernated and not shut down. If you shut down the laptop then its again a big headache to turn it on. So temporarily I am hibernating my computer all the time.

Has anyone tried opening the laptop and fixing the problem? Please post the way it can be done if anyone tries that..

I would check out Flipfire's post and see if that works for you before you go out and spend money. If it doesn't work then you can always replace the panel.

Here is a link to the service manual for the dv6000 series laptops. It will tell you how to take apart the entire laptop, piece by piece:

    DV9000 here with similar problem.

I agree with other solutions here - just buy a new power switch card off ebay and you can save a bunch of money by replacing it yourself. it is anywhere from 5-30 dollars on ebay and is called something like "power switch card with cable"...

the bigger pain with the DV series is unscrewing everything. fill up on carbs beforehand so you have enough energy to take out a thousand screws. all you really need to do though is unscrew the screws underneath the battery, at the back of the laptop, and the three in the middle that hold the keyboard. You can then pop off the panel with the power switch on it and pull out the keyboard so you have some room to move around. Just be sure to unplug cord as well because the card is sensitive and can short out if you touch it while there is power around.

switched mine out, turned it on, and all is set.

if it is just the cable going from the power card to the motherboard, you can actually switch it out and use the cable that goes to the media control buttons, although the tradeoff there is that you can no longer use those buttons (like the volume, play buttons, quickplay, etc...)
