    The video card is 7400go.

Yesterday I left my computer for 3 minutes unatended, and when I returned I saw that the screen was on but there was no picture. Something like a blank screensaver. So I restarted, but the screen still was not displaying anything. There is only backlight with absolutely no image whatsoever.
So I plugged in the laptop today to an external monitor, and the monitor displayed bars of RGB lines all over the place. So I am wonderring what do you guys think could have went wrong? Do you think it could be the GPU, bad connection? I can see that there is some HD activity going on through the led but nothing loads or makes a sound.

I am really tight on time and I wasnt even able to cork it open, and I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a valuable advice on this one.

    Thank you in advance!

Sounds like a bad GPU for sure. A year and a half ago, I owned a dv6424ca that had a similar card (7200 Go) that failed suddenly and without warning. According to this warranty enhancement offered by HP, your laptop (like mine) is eligible for a free repair.

What is your model number, if I may ask?

I am pretty sure that your model *does* fall under the recall, as the model is dv60xx (this is under the affected system list provided in the link). If you have an 7th or 8th generation Nvidia card, then it is definitely part of the warranty enhancement as it has certainly failed.

This is totally absurd. Just got off from an online chat with an HP representative to find out that intel laptops with NVIDIA gpu's are EXCLUDED from that program and that if this happenes to you, you will need to get a new motherboard yourself.
    Amazing support isn't it?

I suppose the laptop is outside the standard 1 year warranty as it is, correct?

At this point it may be more worth your time to sell off your current laptop and start looking for another one; that is, unless you're willing to call HP and speak to a manager. Given that your computer falls under the affected models list, they should repair it.

That is correct Bog. The laptop was bought December 2006 as far as I remember. The thing that is really frustrating me is that HP is acting so oblivious to this whole cituation.

It seems like they are trying to find ways around it. When i called IBM about my T42p, despite it not being in warranty, they just would not let me talk, i was willing to pay for the replacement, but they would not acknowledge me.

Ive isolated my problem to the motherboard and im just going to pray and replace it myself, I hope you might be able to do the same, would you know if it has like a MXMI or II slot where you could replace it? or is it an integrated graphics chip? like the 7400 is sodered on?

Your question is outside the scope of this thread, but no; with absolute certainty I can say that IBM's T42/p models do *not* have MXM video slots.

If the video card has failed, it is likely due to motherboard flex in that area that has detached the GPU solders from the board; I suggest you google this issue, as it is one of the few problems with the model. You should find some fixes for it involving aluminium foil and a soldering iron.

Just found this website http://hplies.com/ that is devoted to the nVidia Defect in HP laptops. They have some nice posts in there and I will be contacting a case manager the first minute I can.

Thank you for your help Bog! Kudos!
