    I'm debating on picking up the dv6500z with the $400 coupon but I'm not sure becasue of the processor... I've never used a machine powered by AMD and was wondering if you guys have any insight for me?

    Is this almost the same as Intel Dual 2 Core processor? If so is the only difference the name or is there a big difference in performance?

    The machine I build on HP's site is the following:

    Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)

    AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-64 (2.2 GHz, 512KB+512KB L2 Cache

    15.4" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

    2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

    128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

    HP Imprint (Radiance) + Fingerprint Reader + Microphone

    802.11b/g WLAN

    250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

    LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support

    High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

    System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)

    The price comes out to $1,015 which is eye catching since the tax is included. I need a new laptop since my zx5000 is on it's way out. Any info is appreciated.

    You should re-consider your purchase, if heat is an issue! All of that hardware in a 15" notebook is going to make your lap burn.Amd cranks up the speed of the basic Athlon architecture by making it run faster=hotter. The TL-58 while slower will be cooler, and the fan won't come on as often.The Intel Core Duo solution runs much cooler.I personally have owned a 15.4 and a 17" there is about 1.5 lbs difference. I think they are both cumbersome-hence you might as well have the nicer display and the number pad.I would suggest the 17" with a single hard drive, the Intel Processor and the graphics card. The price will be minimally higher but you will be happy! I have a 14" now, which I think is the largest size that has any real portability.
    AMD=Desktop=Great Value for money
    Intel=LAptop=just blows away the AMD

    Basic home use. Not really for traveling. Maybe 4 times a yr. total. The main use will be Recording music via an external sound card connected to my dj equipment. Sometimes I have multiple apps running when I record so I need a fast proccessor so my laptop doesnt cause a "skip" while recording.

    Most of the time when people post complaints about AMD notebooks running hot it turns out they're talking about the left palm rest... where the HD is. The TL64 is a very nice chip and unless you're running benchmarks you're not going to notice a difference between it and a C2D other than a little better battery life with Intel.

    That said, the biggest advantage of the AMD platform is that you get a vastly better integrated GPU... which doesn't apply here since you've configured a GeForce 8400GS.

    I don't play games on my laptop so I was thinking of taking that off. The only reason I added it on was I needed to reach the 1200 mark in order to use the coupon lol

    Would you say the AMD integrated graphics can handle viewing HD video, even while multitasking, or would that call for discrete graphics?

    Hi,
    I own an AMD Turion 64 X2 based HP notebook and I can tell you honestly that I'm very pleased. It was nicely equipped for <$800 and the performance is good (Especially after I optimized it using tips from this site).

    If the Windows power options are set correctly (HP recommended or Balanced) the processor will work more efficiently.

    The integrated nVidia graphics soultion is adequate for all things except for playing modern games with eye-candy. I purchased an ATI TV Wonder HDTV USB receiver. Using only inexpensive rabbit ears I enjoy a fantastic picture when the TV signal is strong.

    Good luck!
