Have a HP DV6700 that has a noisy fan... the laptop does NOT OVERHEAT, but the fan does make some noise. Can the FAN be replaced without removing the heat sink... in other words is the fan and heat sink one piece or can they be separated, so I just have to replace the fan...

Thanks in advance... gotta know this before ordering a replacement part.

You can just replace the fan. That said, you're going to have to remove the motherboard and since that's the case, you should probably just go ahead and pull the heat sink, clean the heat sink and clean or replace the fan, and replace the CPU to Heat sink TIM material.

You could also just try a can of air first ; )

    Best, Dave

Get a paperclip, straighten it and stick it so it stops the fan blades from spinning. Then give a good blast of canned air in.
Unless you can stop the fan, do not use forced air. Instead just blow into the exit holes. Otherwise you'll damage fan bearings, resulting in sometimes loud and annoying buzz...

...which brings me into this: to replace the fan you will need to totally dismantle the laptop. The fan is screwed on the heatsink and the whole heatsink+fan assembly is on the underside of the motherboard.

Thanks for the reply(s).... I have already blown air into the openings, and also applied some lithium grease by inserting it as best as I could through the bottom openings and took off the bezel on top and blew it out and applied grease... it is a bit quieter but I think the bearings on the fan are going south.... will order a new fan and some thermal grease... not looking forward to taking the whole laptop apart, but it seems I may have to.... otherwise, this 5 year old lappie has performed quite well... tho I'm on my third battery pack.. second one was a cheap aftermarket and it lasted around 6 weeks... BTW, what does one use to clean the heat sink and CPU before applying the new thermal grease?

    I use alcohol.

You might also consider using something better than "thermal grease" ? Try Artic Sliver or a ceramic and you will see lower operating temps along with your new fan. And speaking of fan... though I have not done this on a laptop fan, I have, on several occasions removed the label on noisy desktop fans to expose the fan axel. Then applied one drop of transmission fluid and let it sit facing up for an hour or so. Clean off the excess, cover the space with the old label or masking tape and re-installed. It will last for years... but doing such in a laptop is a bit risky given the effort required to change it.

    Best and good luck, Dave

I use rubbing Alcohol 90% and Qu-tips to clean off the thermal paste and if it is crusty use a razor to scrape the old stuff off. And you should if everything is working order a replacement fan from eBay or another supplier should the fan take a south vacation faster then you think. Also I found out if yours is what I think the model is I replaced the thermal waffler under the GPU with a thermal grey paste and sandwiched in between a US dime with thermal paste on top and bottom of it and that made a better thermal transfer to the heat sink. I avoid putting any kinda oil like Tranx oil as your fan didn't have oil like that to begin with and doing so could possible cause problems rather then just replacing it all together instead.

I use fuel meant for burners such as trangia. That is basically denaturated alcohol, easily available on any gas station or big supermarket sporting/outdoor/car section. Rubbing alcohol isn't that simple to find around here, that stuff is pretty much same thing when cleaning computer components is considered.

This site is ranked pretty high on google searches. That way people who cannot find rubbing alcohol locally (like I can't) have an alternative to look for :)
