Hey everyone,
I've already done the post in the Which Laptop Should I Buy section and I am very strongly considering the DV6700t as it meets my specs and looks to be a good deal. I do have one question though. How is the screen on this thing? I read in one of the service manuals that it's 150 nits (typical). What exactly do they mean by typical? Some of Dell's screens are 220 nits. Am I opting for a machine with a dim screen or something? I don't think, nit-wise, that the Dell Inspiron has much of an advantage between the two numbers. The one I will be choosing obviously just has the regular brite-view screen. How good is this screen? Is it an improvement over the DV6500s? Anyone have any decent photos of the display that accurately represent it? I don't have the ability to go to Circuit City to have a look. I plan to use this laptop for surfing, text, DVDs (probably moreso than text) and the occasional game.

Thats the brightness. Its not that its dim, just that the dell is probably a bit brighter. For comparison, many flat panel tvs are 450nits. This shouldnt deter you though, because it will still be bright enough for you to see casually.

Bright enough to see casually? Can you clarify? I'm not sure what you mean exactly. I mean I don't expect to work in direct sunlight but I'd like everything to look good including DVDs. I don't want them to be dark.
One related question...does screen size matter as far as nits go? Like could, say, a 12.1 inch screen that's measured at 150 nits look brighter because it's smaller? -
I have a dv6700t. I think the screen is bright enough. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

So would it be safe to say that 150 nits on this unit just means that it's typically that bright but can get brighter? I'm still unclear on what they mean by "typical".

I believe that HP pavillions, on the whole, use LG screens which are the best notebook screens available and also praised for their high brightness and quality.
I wouldn't worry about the brightness at all. -
I have a dv6500t with LG screen and its bright. At night its almost too bright and sometimes I need to dim it. Its really a brilliant screen. I was at sams club the other day looking at some flat panels and laptops.. The HP's always look the best. I briefly had a 1420 dell and those screens were bad. The first was dark with bad viewing angles with a cracked case. The replacement had a grainy screen from hell with what looked like grease smeared on the screen. I would say that most of the time you will be far better off with HP screens then the ones dell uses. HP seems to have some decent quality control with their LCD's. Dell on the other hand.. its the luck of the draw with no QC.
