I have been in a lot of concern lately, regarding this laptop I ordered 2 days ago. I have read a lot of reviews on this laptop, and I was happy in the beginning :D . However, I came accross a specific review that really shocked me. He/she stated that the dedicated graphics (ATI Radeon HD 6770M) doesn't switch from the integrated graphics to the dedicated graphics when playing games on 1920x1080 resolution. Basically speaking, when playing on 1920x1080, it would be like playing with the Intel HD Graphics 3000, not the dedicated graphics. I bought this laptop with the 1920x1080 resolution, and with a 2GB ATI Radeon HD 6770M, and I am scared that this problem will occur in my laptop too. The new HD resolution was the part that really sold me, but I am wondering now, if I wasted 150 dollars on getting this resolution for gaming?
    Please Help.

HP laptop forums are full of complaints about switchable graphics issues so why the other poster said "you'll be fine" is beyond me. I had to send mine back for refund because it wouldn't switch to the Radeon. HP techs and I invested countless hours, to no avail. Their conclusion? Send it in for "repair". HA! there IS no "repair". It's an issue with the latest DV6's and the drivers. I had a Dv6 made in april and SG worked just great. Not so on the one I received June 1.

this kind of post and the review mentioned in the first post is not the normal experience with a new HP laptop

these forums and the internet in general is a giant place to complain and most of the posts in this forum will be include mostly complaining, not the happy excited people that didn't have to send their product back, because they're too busy enjoying it!

my laptop works just fine and yours probably will too (OP). sorry about your problem dave

Mine works fine as well. In fact I just got done playing playing Mass Effect 2 5 min ago at 1080p in max settings and never dipped below 30 fps, with an average of around 40-45 and even hitting 60 at times.

Dave unfortunately got a faulty rig and will hopefully be getting a working one soon. But as for all the high end games, the 6770 kicks in reliably. I even have it kicking in on firefox when I want to stream several 1080p streams as once. Its an awesome freaking computer, you'll be really happy. Granted, the new dynamic switching scheme has its quarks, but it work pretty well overall. All the complaints you see are for one single issue that each person is having. Overall though I'd venture to say that even for those folks, the card and the computer works excellently overall. PM me if you have keyboard flex issues, I will tell you how to fix them

One person (so far) on this forum has tried FSX, and it didn't turn on the Radeon either. without FSX working, there's little point in me getting another laptop. If HP can't get SG to work, I'll end up having to get a desktop, but I don't WANT a desktop. :) I want a working DV6. I keep close tabs on this forum every day to see if a fix has been found. If/when that happens before I lose all patience and settle for a a desktop, I'll reorder another DV6--the HD screen is SO awesome!

Granted some games wont work at the moment with the 6770m and its current drivers and general setup on the DV6. I hope they will iron out the kinks though. I'm not a huge gamer but I play Starcraft a lot and that works extremely well with the 6770m on my 6100tx so I'm happy. In fact, the only reason I bought this laptop was so I could play Starcraft 2 when I'm on business trips with my wife and friends so it serves its purpose :) We have powerful desktops at home to play on, which in my opnion, if you game, desktops are the way to go. It was fun putting them together too...so if you have the space, spare cash, and inclination...a laptop is just sub-par for gaming in general.

Only thing Im a little concerned with the laptop is the heat it outputs when playing games. It's seriously hot and I use the Coolermaster U2 to cool things down a little. So one thing I would say is that HP really couldve designed this laptop a little better with regards to thermals. I'd rather have a thicker laptop that cools better than a thin on that doesnt and potentially degrades the life of the components inside.

I have the option for switchable graphics on mine, and I love this laptop. The only concern I have is the 5400rpm hard drive which seems to load games slower than I'm used to.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I'll look into the problem, when I get my laptop (End of June-ish).
Hope I didn't waste $1129 dollars on this laptop...

i bought the quick ship model which came with a 1TB 5400 drive. I'll probably upgrade it soon enough. The ship dates on a custom built were too far away, I start school before it would have got here :(

    That's good.
On a side note, is there much of a difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm?

no. not really. A 1TB drive is considerably faster (in theory) than a 500GB 7200 drive due to data density...or so I've been told. The 5400rpm drive is actually better for power and heat issues (as well as sound)...

Is there no working method to force the graphics into the dedicated GPU? What about the bios, i know my Acer I just set it to dedicated or in the desktop i can right click and select dedicated. Is there no manual control over this?

I'm concerned too as I'm so close to getting one of these.
