I am getting the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650.

I know that I can output to two monitors (1 HDMI / 1 VGA) and that it will disable the display on the laptop. My question is whether or not I would be able to close the laptop or if would have to stay open...

Also, could I possibly use an HDMI or VGA splitter so that only one cord needs to come out of the laptop?

A splitter means split the same signal, which defeats the purpose to have 2 distinct screens.

You can close the laptop as long you disable the power event on lid action.
    By default is enabled.
